Short bursts of exercise best - expert | Otago Daily Times Online ...

Those keen to get fit will get more bang for their buck by doing short, intense spurts of exercise rather than going for a traditional jog or bike ride, a sports scientist says.

Nick Draper of the University of Canterbury said high-intensity interval training could provide a time-saving alternative to traditional endurance exercise, and actually has more health benefits.

Athletes have known the benefits of interval training - short repetitions of high-intensity exercise separated by breaks or low intensity exercise - for years, but Dr Draper and his team tested whether it could be equally applied to obese, previously sedentary people.

"In terms of overall fitness the high-intensity groups worked as well as traditional training but there were great time savings," he said.

"The high-intensity groups also had a better improvements in blood pressure, and their ability to work below maximum was also improved. Say you were running at an exercise intensity of 120 beats per minute, the endurance training group might have dropped by about 5 beats per minute whereas the high-intensity group dropped by about 10 beats."

Dr Draper said a lack of time was the most common reason gave for people not exercising, and he hoped the research would encourage people to get active - even if for shorter periods of time.

"Traditional so-called 'fat-burning' exercise involves someone walking, running or cycling continuously for 20 to 40 minutes during each session. Whereas studies of high intensity interval training as a time-saving alternative have meant that those taking part in this type of exercise have only needed to exercise for less than half this time.

"It does provide a time-saving alternative and you can get more bang for your buck in terms of that effect on your body, particularly your cardiovascular system and blood pressure."

He said people also needed to consider potential risks before embarking on a high-intensity workout regime.

Credit Issues Of Couples | Top Finance Blog

When two individuals tie the knot, their fiscal lives get hitched as well. You and your partner may plan to buy a home together, or you may also start putting your salaries into a joint savings account. However, your spouse?s credit score will be different from yours. You and your spouse share separate financial documents and records. This is due to the fact that this report consists of all past fiscal accounts and not just of the time that you got married. Consequently, your individual financial reports are separate and continue to be so even after your wedding.

Nevertheless, in certain instances, a lower score of your partner may have a serious impact on the attempt of taking out a loan together. Now, it?s a known fact that times are tough and you can?t really do without some kind of credit or another (unless you?re a millionaire). At some point of time, you might have to take out a joint loan, for example education loan for your kid, home loan, mortgage, personal loan etc. However, if your partner has a poor credit score, it may get difficult for you to secure loans jointly.

Mortgage application

When it comes to mortgage application, you?re allowed to submit your income as well as your partner?s. This will help in increasing the frontiers of your loan. Then, the credit score of the person with the higher returns will be taken into account. Nevertheless, if your spouse holds a poor credit score, it can have serious impact on your loan application. This is especially correct if your spouse has an enormous amount of unpaid debt, as this debt amount can affect your capacity to make payments for a new mortgage. In case your spouse has already gone through a foreclosure, your loan application could be denied even if your credit score is strong.

Education loans

As a couple, you may apply for loans to subsidize your kid?s school and college education. When the lender issues loan provisions, your joint income, debt, as well as credit scores will be taken into consideration. If your spouse has an enormous amount of unpaid debt and a record of not reimbursing borrowed funds, then it may worsen the situation even more. You may even be denied a loan. However, in case your credit score is good but your spouse?s isn?t, it?s possible to counterbalance each other?s scores. Again, the lender may provide a loan issued only in your name. Under such a situation, only your earnings could be employed to obtain huge limits.

Personal loan

If you?re applying for a personal loan in unison with your spouse, it will definitely be influenced by your bad credit. Yet again, keeping your spouse off the personal loan application is a viable option. Nevertheless, your lender may fix your loan limits on the basis of your income, which in turn can reduce the loan amount for which you are eligible.

Rosie on the House: Home Electrical: DIY or Professional?

Most homeowners approach electrical jobs in their home themselves with some anxiety. After all, if you mess up a plumbing job, it?s just a puddle of water on the floor; but when doing the wrong thing with electrical wires, the results can be more serious.

Of course, I?m not allowed to do electrical work at my house any more. My wife, Jennifer, threatens that if she ever sees me take electrical tools out again, she?ll take all the kids and pets off to the ER to wait for me there. In the past, I?ve had sparks fly across the room, and I?ve felt that eerie voltage sting creep through my body.

?Some homeowners get worried about doing electrical jobs, and they should be,? said Joel Wheeler of Wheeler Electric in Glendale. ?If you make a mistake with electrical wires, even if nothing goes wrong at first, eventually something could catch fire.?

Still, plenty of homeowners are confident about their knowledge of electricity and successfully change outlets and install new lighting fixtures. ?They can do that if they have a little know-how and common sense,? said Michael Bensel of the Mighty Electricians in Phoenix. ?But sometimes they go down to the hardware store, and ask someone what to do and he tells them the wrong thing.?

We?re not going to give details on any difficult jobs, but we do have suggestions about handling some basics involving electricity at your house that can be important to you in future:

To start with, get familiar with your electrical service panel and relabel the circuit breakers ? Usually, the panel is outside the house on a wall or inside a garage. In most older homes, a few marks or labels have been scratched on the panel to indicate what areas breakers serve, but that doesn?t provide the detail on all outlets served by individual breakers. Often the labels are nearly unreadable.

The easiest way to fix this is to have two people ? one inside the house and one outside -- both on cellphones and talking back and forth.

Notes On the Nats: Foundation in Place ? Can't Wait 'til Spring | The ...

The Washington Nationals 2012 season was a huge success. But its importance for the District of Columbia is far more than the pleasure it has brought to the region.

Yes, the team was a credit to the city and a steady source of excitement, joy and fun. Even love. Blah, blah, blah. I won?t dwell on all that. I will leave that to The Washington Post sports section that has finally, if a little late, been doing a fine job of celebrating the achievements of our beloved home team. (The only ?home? Major League baseball team in the Washington Metropolitan Region, guys).

Yes, next year brings a starting pitching rotation of Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann, Ross Detwiler, and Surprise-Sure-To-Come, whether in-house or out (of) house. That rotation, on paper, is more promising than the amazing five we had this year,? but with another year?s maturity and experience that the four named young hurlers will benefit from. I expect every team throughout the league will be attempting to keep pace, but we are setting the pace and welcome the competition.

Yes, I expect great improvement in our lineup, as well. Wilson Ramos will be back and the competition with Kurt Suzuki and Jesus Flores at catcher can only upgrade the position. Adam LaRoche, hopefully, will return and bring 30 more home runs and bunches of runs-batted-in. Power bat Danny Espinosa, possibly the most athletic infielder we have, will spend the off-season learning a short, compact swing and come back an all-star second baseman. But slap-hitting Steve Lombardozi, who is a fan-favorite and has earned a chance at more playing time, may get it if Espi doesn?t grow into the hitter he should be. Ryan Zimmerman and Ian Desmond? Good to go. Just show up healthy and let?s do it again.

The outfield? Jayson Werth is ? I didn?t think I would say this ? worth the money we are paying him. He is a good outfielder and has pretty good power, but boy can he lead off and work the count. The guy is the most fun lead-off hitter I have rooted for since Maury Wills of the 1960s LA Dodgers. Bryce Harper will be even better next year than he was in the fine rookie year he just had. Imagine what that will look like. And Michael Morse healthy all season and back to his 30 home-run form?

From this season?s bench, Roger Bernadina, with his speed, hitting ability and athletic talent in the outfield will be back, as well. First baseman and converted outfielder Tyler Moore could be ready to do in the Major Leagues on a full-time basis, if given the chance, what he has done on a part-time basis in the majors. A 30-home run potential is not a stretch here. Ditto for power-hitting lefthanded speedy outfielder Corey Brown.

Yes, all that leads to the best ?Wait ?till next year? scenario I can remember in my lifetime. But for the District of Columbia, the team?s success is ushering in something far more significant.

The neighborhood around Nationals Park is blooming. Apartment buildings, condominiums, office tenants, restaurants, parks, city life. Tax revenues to repay ballpark construction loans, invest in schools, infrastructure, health care.

Particularly exciting for Southwest is the expectation that the 1.6 to 2.0 billion dollar Southwest Waterfront will be breaking ground in the spring of 2013, as spring training begins for the Nationals in Viera, Florida. Added to the hugely popular Arena Stage, the development will transform Maine/M Street and the Waterfront, itself, into a World Class Waterfront neighborhood and another great source of prosperity for the District of Columbia.

Can?t wait.

By Zev Feder, a long-time Southwest resident with a life-long passion for baseball as a player, coach and, above all, fan.

Hurricane Sandy Second-Most Powerful Storm

In sheer power, Hurricane Sandy ranks second among modern hurricanes, beating even Hurricane Katrina, according to Brian McNoldy, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami.

Out in the Atlantic Ocean, Sandy was the most energetic tropical cyclone in history, thanks to its massive wind field.

Once Sandy ramped up to a Category 1 hurricane and slammed into New Jersey, the storm's integrated kinetic energy was second only to Hurricane Isabel in 2003, McNoldy wrote in a blog post.

"It stood out to me that this was a pretty unique case of a rather weak storm as wind speeds go, but huge on the impact scale," McNoldy told OurAmazingPlanet.

Integrated kinetic energy (IKE) is a new scale designed to better convey the destructive power from both a hurricane's wind and storm surge. It's a measure of the wind speed integrated over how wide an area the winds are blowing. The U.S. government patented IKE in 2007. The Saffir-Simpson Scale, used by the National Weather Service, only reports top wind speeds.

The IKE scale helps explain why Hurricane Sandy, which quickly weakened after landfall, created such widespread flooding and damage, McNoldy wrote. The storm surge, combined with a full moon and high tide, affected hundreds of miles of highly populated coastline. The metric also incorporates the storm's enormous size: The wind field was so large that tropical storm force winds (45 mph/ 72 kph) extended 485 miles (780 kilometers) out from the center at landfall. (Out at sea, the wind field reached a maximum extent of 520 miles, or 835 km.)

In modern records, Sandy?s IKE ranks second among all hurricanes at landfall, higher than devastating storms like Hurricane Katrina, Andrew and Hugo, and second only to Hurricane Isabel in 2003, McNoldy calculated.

Sandy?s IKE was more than 140 Terajoules, meaning it generated more than twice the energy of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, McNoldy wrote. At any given moment, many hurricanes contain more energy than an atomic bomb in their surface winds alone, he wrote.

Fishing and Creating New Family Memories | recreation and sports ...

Fishing is a great form of recreation that serves many different purposes.First, you are spending time out on the water getting into nature. It is just you and miles of water.Second, you can use this form of recreation as a way to hang out with friends and family. You can most likely recall the first time that you went fishing with your father. It was your time together. You didn't talk much, but you will always remember these times. It sealed a bond that you still have to this very day.

Learning how to fish is not hard. All you need is a good fishing rod and bait. Also, brush up on the fishing laws for your state.Check to see what types of licenses are required, if any. Some states have these at places like a sporting goods store. You can get a temp or perm license.Quite naturally, this will depend on how often you like to fish. But, neither license will cost a lot of money.Chances are a license was not required when you were a child. You were most likely on the private property of a friend or relative. However, be sure that you get your license and make sure that you only fish in designated spots.

If you haven't been out fishing in a while and don't really know of a good spot, then ask someone if they know a good place.Ask around the sporting goods store. This is always someone available who can suggest a good fishing hole.If you are new to the area, you might even strike up a few new fishing buddies. This would be the perfect way to create a new batch of friends and start new fishing memories.

Tons of people like to go fishing with the family. It is a major form of recreation. You can enjoy nature, mellow out and just have a great time.It provides the opportunity to spend time with your family. There is one thing that the average person hates about fishing and that is having to clean the fish afterwards. If you have a good electric fish scaler like scaler mate, this would not be such a problem.Get the yucky stuff out the way so that you can spend more time with the family doing what you like to do.This will give you more fishing time.

Finally, fishing is a good stress reliever and good for bonding with your family. It is not hard to do.With the right rod and bait, you will be on your way to a peaceful and relaxing afternoon that the whole family will love.Fish with your family and loosen up.Catch a few fish and then get ready for the family fish fry.

Researchers 'watch' antibiotics attack tuberculosis bacteria inside cells

Friday, November 2, 2012

Weill Cornell Medical College researchers report that mass spectrometry, a tool currently used to detect and measure proteins and lipids, can also now allow biologists to "see" for the first time exactly how drugs work inside living cells to kill infectious microbes. As a result, scientists may be able to improve existing antibiotics and design new, smarter ones to fight deadly infections, such as tuberculosis. The new study was published in today's early online edition of Science.

"The development of antibiotics has been stalled for several decades and many infectious microbes have become drug-resistant," says the study's senior investigator, Dr. Kyu Y. Rhee, an infectious disease expert who is an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College. "We must restock the antibiotic pipeline and our study findings provide a powerful new approach for doing just that."

The need to develop new antibiotics is perhaps nowhere more pressing than for the treatment of tuberculosis, TB, which is the single leading bacterial cause of death worldwide, and with the emergence of now total drug resistance, an unchecked global public health emergency.

"Current TB treatments are long and complex, lasting a minimum of six months, and often resulting in treatment failures and the paradoxical emergence of multi-drug resistance," says Dr. Rhee, who is also an associate attending physician at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. "We are still using the antibiotics that were first developed for TB about 50 years ago."

Most TB drugs -- as well as antibiotics for other infections -- were developed through a combination of empirical approaches, Dr. Rhee explains. "However, it had been impossible to know what the drug was doing inside the bacteria."

That situation has now changed. Dr. Rhee and his colleagues, who include investigators from the National Institutes of Health, applied modern technologies that stem from use of mass spectrometry to directly visualize what happens when these drugs infiltrate TB cells. They can "watch," at a basic biochemical level, what happens to both the antibiotic agent and infecting bacteria over time after the drug is administered.

Mass spectrometry, simply stated, is a tool that weighs individual molecules as a way to identify them. It was first used in physics, but has expanded to many disciplines to help scientists identify molecules and determine the quantity of each kind in gases, liquids, as well as solids. Advances in mass spectrometry have made it possible for biologists to leverage the tool in the last few years, and, with this study, evaluate the intracellular fates and actions of small drug molecules.

This study is the first to show mass spectrometry can also be adapted to understand the action of antibiotics on living, intact bacterial cells.

In the study, Dr. Rhee's research team exposed TB to para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS), which was developed more than 50 years ago, and is still part of the multi-drug regimen used to treat resistant TB. It is the second oldest TB drug on the market.

The drug was thought to work by inhibiting an enzyme used by bacteria to synthesize folates, an essential class of nutrients that humans acquire by eating, but bacteria must make on their own. "Many thus believed that the drug interfered with folate synthesis in the TB bacterium by functioning as an occlusive plug that blocked this pathway," says Dr. Rhee.

However, researchers actually found, while it is true PAS prevents the utilization of the natural precursors used to synthesize folates, once inside TB, PAS itself also turns toxic. "PAS is an agent that uses the TB cell's machinery to turn it into a poison. Thus, it doesn't simply kill the cell by stopping its food supply, it also morphs into a lethal drug," Dr. Rhee says.

The researchers also tested a different drug, sulfonamide (sulfa), which is an 80-year-old class of antibacterial agents known to defeat many infections, but not TB successfully.

"Scientists thought sulfa didn't penetrate TB cells, but we witnessed, using mass spectrometry, that it did, in fact, enter the bacteria. But that once inside, TB bacteria were able to degrade the drug," Dr. Rhee says. This finding suggests to researchers that it might be possible to modify the sulfa molecule so that it can withstand degradation by TB bacteria.

"Both of these findings were completely unexpected," says Dr. Rhee. "The study findings show us that sometimes there is a profound disconnect between what we think a drug is doing and how it actually works inside cells."

"The power of mass spectrometry is now evident, and we can't wait to use it to test all of the current cocktail of drugs used to treat TB to find ways to improve them," Dr. Rhee says. "Best of all will be the use of this tool to design and test the much-needed next generation of effective anti-TB agents."
