One might say the most challenging part of being an automotive service technician at Glens Auto & RV in Romeo mi is diagnosing a problem before it can be fixed.
Cars are made up of a bunch of complex systems. There usually could be a number of reasons for any given symptom. So it?s challenging to track down the actual cause of the problem. And it can be frustrating for the vehicle owner because it can take time and money to get to the bottom of a problem. If it?s not something obvious, it?s easy for the customer to focus on the fixing and not the diagnosing.
Let us introduce you to something we?ll call Customer Detective Work ? that is helping your Romeo mi technician find clues to what?s wrong.
We start with the detective basics: What, Where and When. Play along with me. You come in to Glens Auto & RV and your car is making a funny sound.
- Q: Where?s the sound?
- A: Around the right front wheel.
- Q: What kind of sound?
- A: Kind of a clunk, clunk sound.
- Q: When do you hear the sound?
- A: When I turn and accelerate.
- Q: Right and left? Forwards and back??
Do you see where we?re going? You?re gathering additional information to help your Romeo mi technician know where to start. Based on your car and the tech?s experience, he?ll know where to look and can start with the obvious suspects.
You can see how that would be more helpful than dropping the car off with a note that says ?making a funny noise?.
When you think you need to bring a vehicle in, make some notes about the problem. Rather than just saying ?it?s leaking?, tell the tech the color of the fluid, and approximately where under the car you see the puddle.
Things like ?the car is stalling or sputtering? are often very hard to diagnose because they?re intermittent. They may not happen every time you drive and usually aren?t happening when you actually bring the car in. So, it is a big help for you to describe what?s happening in as much detail as possible.
Your Romeo mi technician at Glens Auto & RV will need to be able to duplicate the problem if possible so he needs to know details, like ?it stalls after it?s been driven for about 20 minutes and I go over 50 miles an hour?.
If the tech can experience the problem personally, he?s better able to make a diagnosis and repair. And, then test to see if the repair solved the problem.

Mexican extradited to US under new president
SAN DIEGO -- An alleged drug trafficker was extradited from Mexico on Thursday to face charges in San Diego that he oversaw efforts to bring methamphetamine to the U.S., authorities said.
Cesar Alfredo Meza Garcia, 36, is one of the first people to be extradited from Mexico since President Enrique Pena Nieto took office Dec. 1.
Pena Nieto's predecessor, Felipe Calderon, embraced extraditions as he launched an offensive against drug cartels that shaped his presidency. His administration said it extradited 502 people from Dec. 1, 2006, to the end of 2011, including 478 to the United States.
"We're hoping (Pena Nieto) will continue what President Calderon started," said Tim Durst, assistant special agent in charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations unit in San Diego. "It's wait-and-see. This is a good sign."
U.S. authorities seized more than 200 pounds of methamphetamine and 100 pounds of cocaine during a 20-month investigation that ended in May, ICE said. The drugs were mostly hidden in cars and trucks and strapped to bodies at San Diego border crossings.
The investigation began when authorities stopped a car with 48 pounds of methamphetamine that crossed the border in San Diego and was headed to Los Angeles, Durst said.
U.S. authorities described Meza Garcia as a top figure in the Tijuana cartel, made of the remnants of the once-powerful Arellano Felix family. Secretly recorded phone conversations featured repeated references to "The Engineer," as cartel leader Fernando Sanchez Arellano is known.
Meza Garcia was arrested by Mexican authorities in Tijuana in September and is the highest-ranking target in an investigation that has led to federal charges against nearly three dozen people in San Diego. So far, 21 have been sentenced to prison.
The extradition comes amid a spike in methamphetamine seizures at U.S. border crossings. In California, border inspectors confiscated 9,735 pounds of the drug during the 2012 fiscal year, up 33 percent from a year earlier and nearly five times the amount seized in 2008.
Meza Garcia was scheduled to make an initial court appearance Friday on a charge of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.

Stolen Yacht Washes Ashore: California Man Spots His Boat on a TV Newscast

The owner of a stolen yacht was shocked when his boat washed ashore during a television newscast.
The 82-foot Californian luxury sailboat was featured in a news program as it floated in the surf of the Pacific Coast, Reuters reports.
At first, authorities thought the two men and women on board needed to be rescued, but they were eventually arrested on suspicion of stealing the boat after the owner, John Fruth, saw it on TV and claimed that it was his stolen boat.

The thieves supposedly took the boat from where it was anchored in Sausalito before dawn and they sailed the boat to the town of Pacifica, near San Francisco, where it appeared on a popular surfing beach.
Police believe that the suspects, Leslie Gardner, 63, Dario Mira, 54, and Lisa Modawell, 56, probably intended to take the boat on a much longer outing.
Police on jet skis, the coast guard and a helicopter surrounded the boat but the suspects did not want their assistance getting off. Eventually they did get off the boat and they were immediately arrested after Fruth claimed the boat on TV was his and it was missing.
"He was seeing the news media coverage of a vessel that had run aground," Sausalito police Sergeant Bill Fraass said. "The individuals did not want assistance from the Coast Guard but were stuck on a vessel that could go nowhere."
The thieves had a good time on their short ride. The $4 million boat which sleeps up to six people in three rooms, was stripped of its main sail. The boat which is available for charter at $5,00 a day had beer and pizza on board. The thieves reportedly got sick after partying too much, so they floated along the surf.
Richard Splinder, publisher of sailing newsletter Latitude 38 found it funny that the thieves thought they would be able to get away with stealing such a large boat.
"We can imagine there might be one person dumb enough to think they could steal a very large and expensive blue-hulled yacht and get away with it - where are you going to hide with something so conspicuous?" he wrote. "But three people that stupid in one place?"

New Fox sports network to debut in August

NEW YORK (AP) ? Fox proved television was ready for a fourth major network, and Fox News took on CNN.
The company wants to remind everyone of its record as it challenges ESPN with Fox Sports 1, a 24-hour sports cable network set to launch Aug. 17.
"We're coming in trying to take on the establishment," Fox Sports executive vice president Bill Wanger said Tuesday in announcing the venture. "It's no different than Fox News or Fox Broadcasting back in the '80s. We're going to have to scratch and claw our way all the way to the top."
To do that, Fox executives are confident they have enough live events, with rights to college basketball and football, NASCAR, soccer and UFC fights. In its first year, the new network will broadcast nearly 5,000 hours of live competition and news.
Fox owns the rights to many Big 12, Pac-12 and Conference USA basketball and football games. Its soccer deals include UEFA Champions League and the men's and women's World Cups from 2015-22.
Starting in 2014, FS1 will start broadcasting Major League Baseball games, including part of the postseason. It will show some NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races as early as 2015, with other NASCAR events on the air from the start.
"We believe we've amassed enough live events and can package and put programming around it where we can have scale," Fox Sports co-President Randy Freer said. "We can have significance. We can be a major player in the market."
However, unlike ESPN's lineup, there's no NBA, no SEC football, no ACC basketball and, the biggest problem of all, no NFL games. On that last point, Wanger was quick to add: "Yet."
Still to be determined is whether the NFL sells some Thursday night games separately from its NFL Network package. If it does, everyone will try to buy a piece of the action.
That will be the case for any rights deals that come along soon; there aren't many, with long-term pacts now the norm. NBC and CBS already have their own cable sports networks, and Turner is also a factor. Fox Sports co-President Eric Shanks mentioned the NBA, Big Ten and U.S. Open tennis as appealing properties whose contracts expire in the next several years.
FS1 has two main challenges, he said. One is producing enough alluring live events to draw viewers, and he thinks the network is already in good shape to do that. The other is inertia: Fans accustomed to tuning to ESPN must be persuaded to switch to a different network.
"People need to over time feel like there's a channel number in their head that they can go to as an alternative to one of the more powerful sports channels out there," he said.
Will they watch nightly highlights on something other than "SportsCenter"? FS1 will try to find out with its own news show, which will look more like Fox's NFL pregame coverage than ESPN's cornerstone program.
"We like our position," ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said. "We have always had vigorous competition so there is really nothing substantially new here. Others are, however, beginning to recognize what we have long known: The power of live sports, especially in light of technological advances, is substantial and brings tremendous value in today's entertainment landscape."
ESPN has eight cable networks that combine for almost 30,000 hours of live coverage.
FS1 will be converted from Speed, a motorsports network, and will be available in 90 million homes, compared with 98 million for ESPN and ESPN2.
And in what might seem odd for a company known for drawing a young audience, Regis Philbin will host a weekday sports talk show for the new network. The 81-year-old Philbin jokingly pretended to be hard of hearing when questions came up about this at the news conference.
Wanger noted that "Live! With Regis and Kelly" did well in younger demographics before Philbin left that show in late 2011.
"Regis has appeal from young to old," Wanger said. "That's why we want him."
Fox plans to use its "double box" format for showing commercials during live action for sports events. Kicking off the coverage on Aug. 17 will be a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race from Michigan and a UFC event in prime time.
Fox executives had talked about potentially launching a sports network for years. As DVRs made live events even more valuable, the timing was right once the company was able to line up enough broadcast rights. And not having a cable sports partner could have hurt the main Fox network in negotiations, Freer said. Fox has used cable channel FX in the past to show some sports.
The network wasn't ready to announce a deal with the new basketball conference formed by breakaway Big East schools, but Fox's executives were happy to talk up the ratings draw the league will provide. Freer called it an "iconic basketball brand" that will immediately be one of the top hoops conferences in the country.
"They're very historic, high-profile teams. The Georgetowns of the world and so on, St. John's, Villanova etc.," Wanger said. "It would be a coup if that deal did happen."
Fox is airing the 2014 Super Bowl in the New York area, a valuable opportunity to promote the new network. Its 22 regional channels also will offer regular chances to direct viewers to FS1.
A report by RBC Capital Markets analyst David Bank says that while FS1 may not match ESPN right away, it can thrive without doing so. Banks writes that a "modestly successful" venture would more than quadruple Fox's monthly subscriber fees from what Speed received, and increase ad revenue from $90 million to $460 million.
"It's going to take us a while, and we're aware of this fact," Fox Sports Chairman David Hill said. "We're not expecting to knock ESPN off in the first week or two. ... It's going to be a solid slog."

Factbox: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez died on Tuesday after his battle with cancer, ending the socialist leader's extraordinary 14-year rule of the OPEC nation.
Here are some key facts about Chavez:
* Born to a poor family in Venezuela's plains, or "llanos," on July 28, 1954, Chavez once aspired to be a painter and then a professional baseball player in the U.S. Major Leagues.
* His impoverished but happy childhood in rural Venezuela often were fodder for the folksy anecdotes he used when talking about politics. Combined with formidable charisma, his humble roots helped him forge a strong emotional connection with many of Venezuela's poor, who saw him almost like one of the family.
* A former lieutenant colonel, Chavez spent much of his military career conspiring with other leftist soldiers to overthrow the traditional political order.
* He led a 1992 coup against then-President Carlos Andres Perez that failed but launched his political career. A brief speech while he was being led away to jail, wearing his trademark red beret, electrified many Venezuelans and propelled him toward the presidency as a populist leader.
* After being pardoned, Chavez toured the country before winning a 1998 election. He took office early the following year. For many poor voters, he symbolized a fresh start after decades of governments widely seen as self-serving and corrupt.
* Private media and business leaders remained staunchly against Chavez, however, and in 2002 a group of opposition politicians and dissident troops staged a coup. Chavez was arrested and flown to a military base on a Caribbean island.
* Two days later, loyal military officers and protests by supporters swept him back to power. Chavez accused the United States of being behind the putsch, and said he feared he was about to be killed. The drama of his return as president took on almost religious overtones for some passionate "Chavistas."
* Chavez enjoyed wide backing among the poor majority partly due to massive state spending to expand health and education programs, financed by income from oil exports. He also cultivated support by confronting the United States, which he denounced as a decadent, war-mongering empire.
* Several times he threatened to stop oil shipments to the United States - including when he accused then-U.S. President George W. Bush of backing the 2002 coup - but never did so. The United States remains Venezuela's biggest oil export market, but Chavez also increased fuel sales to China and anti-Western states such as Belarus, Iran and Syria.
* Inspired by his friend and mentor, Cuba's Fidel Castro, Chavez took Venezuela down an increasingly radical path, nationalizing much of the economy and running the government with a micro-managing - and many said autocratic - style.
* Opponents accused Chavez of repressing critics, squandering record oil revenues and scaring away investors by seizing assets ranging from shops and farms to multibillion-dollar refinery projects run by foreign energy companies.
* Chavez adopted a deliberately populist style, using colorful and strong language that drew on the macho culture of the "llanos" of his youth, and the barracks of his military career. Like Castro, he was known for long-winded televised speeches that often dragged late into the night. In 2012, he broke his own record by speaking for nearly 10 hours.
* Chavez was married twice. He has three daughters and a son. He and his second wife, a journalist and politician, divorced in 2000. Little is known about his private life as president, but he has often mentioned enjoying watching baseball on TV, reading, and listening to folk music from the "llanos."
* Chavez announced in mid-2011 that he was being treated for cancer. He underwent four operations in Cuba, as well as grueling chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He wrongly declared himself cured twice.
* Chavez won re-election in October 2012 with 55 percent of the vote, but was too ill to be sworn in for his new six-year term beginning on January 10. Venezuela's Supreme Court ruled that he remained president, even in the hospital.
* He flew back to Venezuela in February and went straight to a military hospital in Caracas to continue receiving treatment.
* On March 5, 2013, his vice president said he had died.
