For family that lost home to Sandy, 'a miracle' | PoconoRecord.com

By

December 24, 2012

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) ? The text from Sister Diane at St. Ignatius Martyr church was as odd as it was urgent: "A man is going to call. You must answer the phone."

Kerry Ann Troy had just finished her daily "cry time" ? that half-hour between dropping the kids off at school and driving back to her gutted house on New York's Long Island, or to the hurricane relief center, or to wherever she was headed in those desperate days after Sandy, when life seemed an endless blur of hopelessness and worry.

Cellphone reception was sporadic, so even if the stranger called, she would likely miss him. Besides, she had so many other things on her mind.

After spending the first week with relatives in Connecticut, Troy, a part-time events planner for the city, and her husband, Chris, a firefighter, had managed to find a hotel room for a week in Garden City. The couple had no idea where they and their three children ? Ryan, 13, Connor, 12, and Katie, 4 ? would go next. Hotels were full. Rentals were gone. Their modest raised ranch, a few blocks from the beach, was unlivable.

But the Troys faced another dilemma.

The family had been looking forward to a weeklong, post-Thanksgiving trip to Disney World, paid for by the Make-A-Wish-Foundation to benefit Connor, who suffers from a life-threatening, neuromuscular disease. He had lost one wheelchair to the storm. His oxygen equipment and other medical supplies were damaged by water. He was disoriented and confused.

How could they tell their sick child that the storm that had disrupted his life might also cost him his dream ? to meet Kermit the Frog?

Yet Chris Troy felt he couldn't leave. And Kerry Ann said she wouldn't go without him.

And then ? in the space of a few hours ? everything changed.

A school administrator pulled Kerry Ann aside when she went to pick up Katie. She told her of a vacant summer home ? a spacious, fully furnished, three-bedroom house in nearby Point Lookout, which the owners wished to donate to a displaced family. The Troys could live there indefinitely, at no cost, while they sorted out their lives.

Kerry Ann could hardly believe their good fortune. The kids could stay in their schools. The family could go to Florida after all.

But that was only the beginning.

The stranger that Sister Diane had texted her about earlier had left a message.

His name was Donald. He wanted to meet the Troys. He wanted to help.

___

At St. Ignatius Martyr, offers of help began pouring in as soon as the storm waters receded: spaghetti dinner fundraisers, fat checks from churches in North Carolina and Texas, smaller donations from nearby parishes.

For weeks the church had no power, heat or working phones. Masses were held in the school gym. Monsignor Donald Beckmann, scrambling to help his displaced parishioners, was a hard man to track down.

But Donald Denihan, a 51-year-old businessman from Massapequa, managed to find him. He wanted to see the devastation firsthand. And he wanted to help one family rebuild. He would pay for everything, from demolition costs to new paint. He just wanted to make sure he found the right family, perhaps someone elderly, perhaps someone with a disability.

Over the phone he asked Beckmann: "Will you help me choose?"

The priest's heart sank. There were thousands of families in need, people who had lost everything. How in the world could he pick just one?

A few days later Beckmann and Sister Diane Morgan gave Denihan a tour of their battered barrier island town off the South Shore of Long Island. They took him to the West End, a warren of narrow streets named after the states ? Arizona, Ohio, Michigan ? and crammed with small homes, many of them passed down from generation to generation. The neighborhood is staunchly working class; police officers and firefighters and teachers live here, many of them of Irish and Italian descent.

Now it was a disaster zone. Nearly every home had been flooded, their interiors ? kitchen stoves and sheet rock, children's toys and mattresses ? spilling out of Dumpsters that lined the streets.

Father Beckmann drove Denihan to a small raised ranch at 103 Minnesota Avenue with a wheelchair ramp at the side. He told him about the family who lived there, the Troys, how they had evacuated to Connecticut mainly because of their sick son, how Kerry Ann's childhood home around the corner, newly rebuilt after burning to the ground six years earlier, had been lost to the flood.

Then he took Denihan to another ruined house, the tiny bungalow where the church's 74-year-old cook had climbed a 7-foot ladder into the attic to escape the rising water. All she could do was pray as she watched her disabled son nearly drown in his wheelchair below.

Both families were in urgent need of help, Beckmann said. Which one would Denihan choose?

Denihan listened intently.

After surviving three near-death experiences ? a duck-shooting accident at 16, prostate cancer at 36, and a serious boating accident in 2011 ? he had concluded there was a reason God wanted him around.

And so Denihan, who had made his money in hotel and real estate investments, had set up a fund. He called it God is Good. Until now, he wasn't sure how he would use it.

"I can't choose, Father," Denihan confessed, as they drove back to the church. "I'll just have to take care of both."

The priest offered up a silent prayer of thanks.

The nun grabbed her cellphone and texted Kerry Ann.

___

Nothing had prepared Chris Troy for the sight of his home when he returned two days after the storm. The basement ? including his beautifully finished wooden bar, Kerry Ann's office space, the kids' playroom, the laundry and boiler room ? were dank and foul-smelling and mold was already growing. The water had reached to the ceiling, seeping into the living room, kitchen and bedrooms upstairs.

Troy prides himself on his stoicism, on being able to cope with anything. But a few hours passed before he could bring himself to break the news to his family.

"The house is a mess, and Daddy will fix it," he told Katie, who burst into tears when she heard her toys were gone. "And the toys you lost you will get back at Christmas."

In reality, he didn't know how the family was going to cope or where they would spend Christmas. Insurance wouldn't cover the basement area. He couldn't afford to pay for repairs himself. And though friends and volunteers offered to help, most could spare only a few hours because they were so busy dealing with damage to their own homes.

"We were in a tough situation," Chris said.

So they gladly agreed to meet with Denihan. Perhaps he would offer to pay for the sheet rock, or a generator, Chris thought. That would be nice.

Denihan showed up with a contractor. He walked through the house. He talked to the children. He seemed kind and matter-of-fact and purposeful.

Standing on their front porch, in the chilly morning sun, Denihan made a promise. He would rebuild their home. They could make any alterations they wanted, like installing a wheelchair-accessible shower and central air, something the Troys had dreamed of, because Connor's disease causes him to overheat.

"I'll take care of everything," Denihan said. "And we'll start first thing tomorrow."

It was a few days before Thanksgiving and the Troys, distracted by the move to the borrowed house and their upcoming trip to Florida, didn't fully comprehend. What exactly did he mean by "everything?"

It wasn't until a moving van trundled up the next morning and workers carted off their remaining belongings and started tearing down walls, and Denihan told Kerry Ann to start picking out paint colors and tile, that the enormity of it began to sink in.

"This stranger walks into our lives and offers not just to rebuild our home, but to build us a better home," said Kerry Ann. "And another family lends us their home. It's absolutely a miracle."

___

The trip to Disney World was the best of their lives. Connor had never been happier, bright and alert and grinning from ear to ear as he met the Magic Kingdom characters ? Mickey and Woody and the Minions and, of course, Kermit. He went on carousel rides specially rigged for wheelchairs, splashed in the pool in his water chair and ate ice cream all day long.

Back home, they marvel at their new accommodations: The house is bigger than their own, with sweeping views of the Atlantic and a backyard with a swing-set that Katie calls her private park.

Still, they wrestle with how to come to grips with their new reality. And how to give thanks.

The Troys are used to struggle, to battling through on their own. Kerry Ann's father died when she was a 19, after seven years in a coma, and she helped raise her younger siblings. They nearly lost Connor a few years ago, after spinal surgery left him in a body-cast for eight weeks and doctors didn't think he would survive. Kerry Ann's mother, Kathy, spent a year living with them in the basement, while her burned home was rebuilt.

So they find themselves agonizing over Denihan's generosity, sure of their gratitude but unsure how to process it.

"How do you thank someone for giving you back your home and your life," Chris asks. "What do I do ... give him a child?"

Denihan isn't looking for thanks ? and he has his own children. He said he just feels blessed to be in a position to help, and grateful that others are pitching in, too. His contractors ? plumber, electrician and builder ? have offered to do the work either for free, or at cost. Perhaps, he says, others will hear the story and step up to help more Sandy victims in the same way.

Denihan hopes the family can move back home for Christmas ? a goal the Troys initially thought was wildly optimistic, until they saw how rapidly everything was progressing. Already, new walls have gone up, the accessible shower has been installed, they have light and water and heat.

Most of all, two months after Sandy destroyed their home and disrupted their lives, they have hope. And plans.

They will have Christmas and a tree and Santa will bring the kids gifts. They will throw a party at their sparkling new house on Minnesota Avenue.

And they will celebrate a special Mass at St. Ignatius Martyr to give thanks for surviving the storm ? and for the miracle that happened after, when strangers walked into their lives and gave them back their home.

LaPierre refuses to back new gun curbs

After a controversial press conference last week, NRA head Wayne LaPierre made an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" saying the American people would be "crazy" to not put armed guards in schools. Meanwhile, Newtown, Conn., continues coping with the death of 26 people during the tragic shooting. NBC's Ron Mott report.

By Tom Curry, NBC News national affairs writer

Updated 10:50 a.m. ET:?On NBC?s Meet the Press, National Rifle Association chief Wayne LaPierre on Sunday refused to support new gun control legislation and maintained his support for putting armed guards and police in schools in response to the Dec. 14 school shootings in Newtown, Conn.

See the Meet The Press page

?If it?s crazy to call for putting police in and securing our schools to protect our children, then call me crazy,? LaPierre told NBC?s David Gregory. ?I think the American people think it?s crazy not to do it. It?s the one thing that would keep people safe and the NRA is going try to do that.?

He added that the United States is now spending $2 billion to train police officers in Iraq and asked why federal funds could not be spent to train school guards to protect schools in the United States.

Asked about restricting the size of ammunition magazine or clips, LaPierre said, ?I don?t believe that?s going to make one difference. There are so many different ways to evade that, even if you had that. You had that for 10 years when (Sen.) Dianne Feinstein passed that ban in ?94. It was on the books. Columbine occurred right in the middle of it ? it didn?t make any difference.?

For the first time since the Connecticut shootings, NRA Chief Wayne LaPierre answers questions from NBC's David Gregory about his organization's stance on gun violence in America.

Feinstein, D-Calif., was the author of the 1994 ban on certain types of semiautomatic firearms which expired in 2004. She has announced that she will introduce new legislation early next year. Semiautomatic firearms, including semiautomatic weapons sometimes called ?assault weapons,? fire one round per pull of the trigger.

?I know there?s a media machine in this country that wants to blame guns every time something happens,? LaPierre said, but he insisted that an armed guard might have been able to stop Adam Lanza, the killer in Connecticut.

?If I?m a mom or a dad and I?m dropping my child off at school I?d feel a whole lot safer? if there were trained armed security guards or police protecting the school from people such as Lanza, LaPierre said, although he conceded that ?nothing is perfect? as a deterrent against crime.

LaPierre also said, ?We have a mental health system in this country that has completely and totally collapsed. We have no national database of these lunatics? and complained that de-institutionalization of the mentally ill had put too many dangerous people on the streets of America. ?We have a completely cracked mentally ill system that?s got these monsters walking the streets,? LaPierre said.

And he said many states do not put their records of those adjudicated to be mentally ill into the national instant check system that is designed to screen out convicted criminals and the mentally ill from buying guns.

The NRA CEO also argued that the federal government had invested far too little effort into enforcing the longstanding federal law that makes it illegal for convicted felons to possess guns. The federal effort to enforce existing restrictions on gun possession, he said, is ?pitiful.?

On Meet the Press, NRA chief Wayne LaPierre forcefully defended his call for armed officers in every school. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

He said, ?If you want to control violent criminals, take them off the street.?

But he firmly opposed curbs on private gun sales and contended that the advocates of stringent restrictions on such sales want to put ?every gun sale under the thumb of the federal government.?

LaPierre called Feinstein?s bill ?a phony piece of legislation? which he predicted would not become law.

After a week of silence following the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School the NRA responded, saying armed guns in schools is the answer. "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," said Wayne LaPierre, NRA's executive vice president. NBC's John Harwood reports.

President Barack Obama has tasked Vice President Joe Biden with the job of consulting with members of the Cabinet and outside organizations to come up with legislative proposals by next month.

When asked about this initiative, LaPierre said, ?if it?s a panel that?s just going to be made up of a bunch of people that for the past 20 years has been trying to destroy the Second Amendment, I?m not interested in sitting on that panel?. The NRA is not going to let people lose the Second Amendment in this country.?

Following LaPierre on Meet the Press, Sen. Charles Schumer, D- N.Y., said that the NRA leader is ?so extreme and so tone deaf that he actually helps the cause of us passing sensible gun legislation in the Congress?. He is so doctrinaire and so adamant that I believe gun owners turn against him as well.?

Schumer said that LaPierre believes ?the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is good gun with a gun. What about trying to stop the bad guy from getting the gun in the first place? That?s common sense. Most Americans agree with it.?

But Sen. Lindsey Graham, R- S.C., said killers such as Lanza were ?non-traditional criminals? people who are not wired right for some reason. And I don?t know if there?s anything Lindsey Graham can do in the Senate to stop mass murder from somebody that?s hell bent on doing crazy things? -- apart from better security in schools. The South Carolina Republican also called for getting ?mass murders off the streets before they act, by better mental health detection.?

After a week of calls for tighter gun restrictions, the National Rifle Association called for putting more armed security officers in the nation's schools and expressed concerns about violence portrayed in video games, movies and music. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Graham said that while he was out Christmas shopping in South Carolina this weekend, people ?have come up to me (and said) ?Please don?t let the government take my guns away.? And I?m going to stand against the assault (weapons) ban because it didn?t work before and it won?t work in the future.?

LaPierre?s appearance on Meet the Press followed the strong reaction over his defiant stand during a Friday press briefing about the NRA?s response to the Connecticut school shootings.

Amid a national debate over what security measures school administrators should take to ensure the safety of students, gun-control advocates reacted with disbelief Friday to LaPierre?s call for armed guards in every school and his blaming of Hollywood films, video games, and popular music for school shootings such as the one in Connecticut.

How firmly the NRA?s allies in Congress will oppose any new legislative initiatives from Obama, Feinstein or others remains an open question.

In a test of the NRA?s legislative influence, the House of Representatives late last year passed the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act, which has not yet been acted on by the Senate.

In the House vote, 229 Republicans and 43 Democrats voted for the NRA-backed bill.

The House bill allows a person with a photo identification card and a valid permit to carry a concealed firearm in one state to carry a concealed handgun in another state in accordance with the restrictions of that second state.

Rock Stars, Dying Early To Be Famous | Psych Central News

Rock Stars, Dying Early To Be Famous Successful solo rock and pop stars are twice as likely to die early as those in a band, according to new research.

The researchers also found that rock stars who died from drug or alcohol misuse were more likely to have had a difficult or abusive childhood.

For the study, the researchers included 1,489 North American and European rock and pop stars over a 50-year period between 1956 (Elvis Presley) and 2006 (Regina Spektor, The Arctic Monkeys, and Snow Patrol).

Their successes were determined from international polls and top 40 chart hits, while details of their personal lives and childhoods were drawn from a range of music and official websites, published biographies, and anthologies, the researchers explain.

During the 50-year period, 137 (9.2 percent) famous rock stars died. The average age of death was 45 for North American stars and 39 for those from Europe.

The gap in life expectancy between rock and pop stars and the general population widened consistently until 25 years after fame had been achieved, after which death rates began to approach those of the general population ? but only for European stars.

Solo performers were around twice as likely to die early as those in a band, whether they were European (9.8 percent solo vs 5.4 percent in a band) or North American (22.8 percent vs 10.2 percent).

The researchers speculate that the peer support offered by bandmates may be protective. In other words, the social support of friends can help alleviate the stress and loneliness of touring on the road.

While gender and the age at which fame was reached did not influence life expectancy, ethnicity did, with those from non-white backgrounds more likely to die early, according to the study.

The chances of survival increased among those achieving fame after 1980, researchers noted.

Nearly half of those who died as a result of drugs, alcohol, or violence had at least one unfavorable factor in their childhoods, compared with one in four of those dying of other causes.

Unfavorable factors included physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; living with a chronically depressed, suicidal, mentally or physically ill person; living with a substance abuser; having a close relative in prison; and coming from a broken home or one in which domestic violence occurred.

Four out of five dead stars with more than one unfavorable childhood factor died from substance misuse or violence-related causes, according to the study.

A career as a rock star may be attractive to those escaping an unhappy childhood, but it may also provide the resources to feed a predisposition to unhealthy or risky behaviors, say the researchers.

?Pop/rock stars are among the most common role models for children, and surveys suggest that growing numbers aspire to pop stardom,? they write in the study, which was published in the online journal BMJ Open.

?A proliferation of TV talent shows and new opportunities created by the Internet can make this dream appear more achievable than ever. It is important they [children] recognize that substance use and risk-taking may be rooted in childhood adversity rather than seeing them as symbols of success.?

Ho Ho Holy Discount: Vatican tax-free store busy

(AP) ? Anyone left on your Christmas list just aching for a 65-inch Samsung 3D flat-screen television? Just your luck. The Vatican's duty-free department store has one on sale for ?2,899 ($3,840) ? a nifty savings over the ?3,799 ($5,032) it costs at Italy's main electronics chain Euronics.

Or how about some new luggage for the holidays? The Vatican shop stocks a variety of Samsonite Cordoba Duo carry-ons for ?123, a nice markdown from the ?135 on the Samsonite website. But if a last-minute shopping splurge is in order, the Vatican can also oblige: Take this leather-bound travelling trunk from Florence's "The Bridge" leatherworks, with its five drawers, plaid interior, six wooden hangars and shiny brass buckles.

At ?5,900, it comes with a matching leather golf club bag, just what every monsignor needs under his Christmas tree.

There's a little-known open secret in the Vatican gardens, a few paces behind St. Peter's Basilica and tucked inside the Vatican's old train station: a sprawling, three-story tax-free department store that rivals any airport duty free or military PX, stocking everything from Church's custom grade shoes (?483 a pair) to Baume et Mercier watches (ladies ?1,585, men's Capeland ?5,000).

There's a hitch, however. It's not open to the public, only to Vatican citizens, employees and their dependents, diplomats accredited to the Holy See and (unofficially) their lucky friends who, after stocking up on holiday must-haves, proceed to the checkout with their Vatican connection and the ID card that entitles them to shop there.

To be sure, Rome is no stranger to tax-free shopping. Embassies, nearby military bases and the U.N. food agencies all have commissaries for their employees, where imports of everything from American ice cream to French wine can be had minus the 21 percent sales tax included in list prices in Italy.

The Vatican has that and more, given that it's its own sovereign state ? the world's smallest ? operating in central Rome. At 44 hectares (110 acres), the Vatican city state is the physical home of the Holy See: the pope and governing structure and administration of the Catholic Church.

The Vatican Museums, home of Sistine Chapel, are the main profit-making enterprise of the Vatican city state, bringing in ?91.3 million in revenue last year alone. But other smaller entrepreneurial endeavors boost the Vatican's coffers as well, including the department store, the tax-free gas station, the stamp and coin collecting office, the Vatican pharmacy and its supermarket.

And in these days of austerity, their profits and bottom line are ever more important to the Vatican.

The Vatican is entitled to run such tax-free enterprises inside its walls based on the Lateran Treaty, the 1929 pact that regularized and regulates the Vatican's relations with Italy. But those regulations also limit the Vatican's customer base, lest all of Rome descend on the supermarket to stock up on Gordon's Gin (?8.50 a liter compared to the ?15 it can run in nearby liquor stores) or Montecristo No. 3 Cuban cigars (box of 25 ?84 ($110.95) compared to $164.95 on www.bestcigarprices.com).

About 4,700 people are employed by the Holy See and the Vatican city state; the Vatican's diplomatic corps ? the Holy See has relations with some 175 countries ? adds another chunk to the customer base.

Few people outside Rome know the department store exists ? there's no evidence of it on any Vatican website, no photos of its wares, no advertising outside the Vatican walls. Those who do know it exists seem to want to pretend it doesn't since the high-end luxury items on sale aren't necessarily in tune with either the sobriety or the salaries of the Vatican rank-and-file.

In fact, on a recent Thursday morning, nary a collar nor religious habit was in sight as ordinary lay folk milled around the spacious store during December's "extraordinary opening hours" ? extended to accommodate bargain-hunting Christmas shoppers who were rewarded with a wine tasting in the central atrium and piles of Brooks Brothers non-iron shirts and Burberry backpacks to choose from.

"More than the prices, it's the material," said Luciano, a bulky Roman, who refused to give his last name as he shopped for an overcoat with his wife and an obliging Vatican friend waiting at checkout. "This one I don't like ? I look like a priest," he muttered as he put the navy blue trench coat back on a hangar.

Cardinal Edmund Szoka, the American who sought to bring some order into the Vatican's finances as head of the Vatican city state, is credited with having made the department store what it is today, moving it into the Vatican's underused train station, a miniature version of Washington's Union station with a sweeping double staircase and glass-front window that frames the dome of St. Peter's a few meters (yards) away.

Szoka said he moved it from the basement of the Vatican government building to the train station for more space, since the station wasn't used anymore for passengers and provided the perfect, airy open space that a shop of its kind would require.

"Our principal motivation in changing the train station building into a department store was mainly for the convenience of our employees, as well as for those who could come into the Vatican and shop there," he said in an email from his home in Michigan. "Naturally, we expected a profit, but that was not the primary motivation."

Szoka retired in 2006, well before the global economic crisis hit. The current leadership of the "Governorato" as the city state administration is called, recently asked all department heads to come up with cost-saving or profit-making initiatives to help the Vatican get through the tough times.

"Any good administrator wants to save what can be saved," said Monsignor Giuseppe Sciacca, the governorato's No. 2. "It seems obvious, necessary."

The Philatelic and Numismatic Office, for example, recently started selling a special limited-edition stamp to help pay for the ?14 million restoration of the Bernini colonnade in St. Peter's Square after corporate sponsorship dried up amid the recession.

Vatican Radio announced in July it would be saving "hundreds of thousands of euros" in energy costs by stopping short -and -medium-wave broadcasts to Europe and the Americas, using other technologies instead.

Perhaps even more than the department store, the Vatican supermarket is a much-sought after perk for Vatican employees, and a boost to the Vatican's bottom line. And at Christmastime, it is as jammed as the department store, with lines snaking through the store and cars taking up valuable parking spaces inside Vatican City as shoppers pile their carts high with panettone, the traditional Italian Christmas cake which is the de rigueur gift for Italian holiday parties. Panettone can run ?25 a pop at Roman bakeries; in the Vatican supermarket, a high-end brand runs almost half that.

"The Nutella is just better here," said Maria Grazia Mancini, a Rome municipal worker who was doing a major pre-Christmas shop with her father, a Vatican employee. "The products here are for export ? the same brands but for export, so it's better quality."

While Sciacca is only too pleased to see the Vatican saving money where it can be saved and making it where it can be made, he was adamant that there are no plans to expand the customer base of the Vatican's little-known discount stores. Accords with Italy don't allow it.

"We shouldn't. And we can't," he said.

He spoke on the sidelines of the presentation of the Vatican's 2012 nativity scene, being unveiled Monday night and donated for the first time. The Vatican happily accepted the donated creche from the Italian region of Basilicata after its ?550,000 Christmas setup in 2009 was exposed earlier this year during the scandal over leaked Vatican documents.

We do not need to tell that all the American can appear in a difficult situation as the financial situation does not change but people need to get prepared. As a result of these precautions, people started spending money on the goods that can be used for a long time and cannot get spoilt. A lot of financial experts remark that the customers started to pay attention to the durability of goods they buy and financially consumer spending and demand for this sort of goods climbed enormously.

In most situations, the increase in consumer spending can be a factor of the economic and individual wealth growth, but in this situation, we cannot deny the fact that people are getting prepared to something bad that can influence their liver and people do everything possible to prevent all these negative effects. The awaiting for tax rates increase and spending cuts, people want to get what they can before the prices for these products and services are not so high. Everyone understand that the price for these products will go higher when the tax rates increase and people will need to spend a lot more to get what they want.

The government does not want to solve their problems by decreasing the expenses and increasing the effectiveness of the economic model but they want to do it with the help of ordinary people that do not earn so much. One of the directions to spend money was the purchase of houses as people expects an increase in price for them and those who wanted to save, started buying them. As a result, the sales of houses increase by 0.4 percent according to the information provided by the Commerce Department. The demand for the products that can be used for a long time including machinery and computers demonstrates the increase of 0.7 percent. Besides, the high increase in unemployment rates was triggered by the desire of people to buy gift for relatives and friends.

Besides, the consequences of Sandy made people change their cars damaged during this hurricane. According to the information provided by the lawmakers, the increase of money gained by taxation will be equal to $600 billion and the government will try to increase spending cuts right in the 1st of January. This increase in demand for goods and services provides some encouragement for the development of the economic situation in the United States.

Besides, according to one of the senior U.S. economic experts at Societe Generale states that the new economic year will start rather slowly and there will not be a great boos in spending and profits of companies. The economic effectiveness will be rather gradual and people will spend money on just necessary things.

Is a relationship less valid because it is long distance? ? me and India

?.Of course not, although unfortunately not everyone shares that opinion.

It?s not far off of two years that babu and i have been together now, yet in some people?s eyes, because our relationship is long distance it still doesn?t qualify as a proper relationship. The first example of this came from my mum, I?ll tell you about that in a minute. The second being from a colleague at work, at this point we didn?t know each other too well and she had just joined our team from another in the department. Don?t get me wrong, she?s the sweetest girl ever but at this moment In time her opinion insulted me. We were talking about relationships in general and she says it must be hard for me etc etc, only to continue to ask why i didn?t just get a boyfriend in this country because its much easier ? this wasn?t in jest, she was serious. I mean, what do you say to that? I simply asked if she would just dump her boyfriend if the circumstances were a bit difficult. -of course she wouldn?t ? ?but that?s different? she replied.

About a 6 months ago I found my mum trying to set me up with the son of someone at their local pub ? she had shown them a photo I had sent whilst I was away (with babu!) and they had remarked that I was ?fit? (for the non-British amongst us that means attractive, by no means does it mean fit this body has never stepped foot In a gym and is very fond of cake!) and since he has his own house and a car apparently, we should get together. I had to remind her that I have a boyfriend thank you very much, to which she replied ? ?oh but he?s miles away, you want one much closer to home?.

Which brings me to the event that prompted me to write is post. Every Christmas the local fire engine preservation society dress their engine in tinsel and come round the local area collection money and blaring out Christmas tunes. It?s been a traction since I can remember ? think of it as the local equivalent of the coca cola truck ? it?s not Christmas until its been! Anyway, they got a bit hi-tec this year and got a Facebook page, which my mum (Facebook addict) loved! It can be touch and go if they will do out street or not so since they were open to bribes mum offered them some extra cash and some mince pies (on fb) to come down our road, and so on Monday night, a day earlier then planned they turn up. Of course we lavish them with cash and some of my own recipe mice pies, which they enjoy so much they tell us they?re coming back again the next day! Back to the kitchen it was for me then. The next day I get a mail from mum with a copy of their last Facebook update -
?Nice offerings of mince pies in .. Be back tomorrow.. Oh and you daughters phone number is wanted :-) ? which brought a smile to my face since its very flattering, and bragging rights at work that I?d pulled a fireman, but that?s as far as it goes. Not interested, I have a boyfriend who is perfectly lovely. So on the way home from work I call my mum up with the intention if having a giggle about it when she says something that really made me angry, ?oh why don?t you take his number, go for a drink or something, you never know? ?I have a boyfriend already remember??? Was my instant reply, and the she went on to say that it wouldn?t do any harm, that he might be nice, that Babu and I aren?t a proper relationship since he?s in the other side of the world! ? yep, blood was boiling!

20121219-213349.jpg

Ok ok, it?s not a regular relationship by any means, BUT we still love each other, we still talk on the phone, on Skype, we still share things with each other we wouldn?t with anyone else, we still dream and plan our future together, we still do the same things every other couple do, we just don?t get to do it face to face so often. And yes, we would change it in a heartbeat if we could, and one day we will be In a position to do that.

To address the main concern people give ? you?ve not spent enough time together to know what each other is really like?- well actually this year alone we have spent just over 60 days in each others company, which for a LDR is pretty good. and believe me, it has been long enough for each others ways and habits to show through and sometimes irritate. Not to motion the hours every day we spent on the phone when he was at home. We?ve got a pretty good idea about each other! Realistically we?re not going to be able to live together before we marry one day ? the government and my financial situation together put a stop to any of those kind of thoughts immediately. I have my eyes open, and actually I spent 7 and 5 years living I the pockets of my exes respectively before we figured out those relationships weren?t right, so really that throws that argument out of the window ? besides ? people marry virtual strangers every day In India ? I?m not going to get into discussion about arranged marriage right now ? but I just want to reinforce my point!

And besides, if someone starts dating someone in the army, and they head off to a war zone ? is their relationship not real? How about the lady at work who?s husband works In the gulf for several months at a time, is their relationship not a proper relationship?

Do people think I purposely chose to put myself in this situation ? well, yes, in a way I suppose I did, however, I believe a large amount is down to fate, destiny if I may, was I wrong to pursue this? After that instant strong connection we had upon meeting should we just parted ways a week later and let it be? A couple of days after me met I had wrote about out meeting in my journal, and I had written about how even though we barely knew each other, or even really spoken, the thought of leaving that ship and never seeing him again would?ve killed me ? and this was someone not looking for a relationship, and this isn?t my usual approach (before anyone takes the assumption I?m one off these girls who just needs to be loved, no matter who) something about this meeting was pre-planned by someone, something, whatever it is.

What I?m getting at anyway is that it pisses ? yes, pisses me off (I don?t really like to swear here but I feel it?s justified) that people don?t take this relationship seriously. This has lead to me pussyfooting around people, softly softly, don?t want to scare the parents. Well, the owner of a company I work closely with, lost his wife two weeks ago to a brain tumor, just under a year ago a perfectly healthy lady In her 50s blacked out, and from that moment forward her life was never the same again. It makes you really think. Life can be short, you never know what is around the corner, I?ve spent too much time padding with cotton wool so not to scare my parents, in fact with very little success. ? they still freaked out. that day I found out that lady passed, and left her wonderful husband and daughter behind I realised I need to do what is right for me, for my heart, because one day it might just be too late. I want to please my parents too, but I fear that would eventually be to the detriment of my own happiness, maybe they will meet half way one day, but I can?t keep putting my life an happiness on hold until they do. I really really hope that when the day comes, they will support me, but I guess that if they don?t, no matter how much it hurts I will have to deal with it.

Hearing Test for Physical and Neurological Process Damage

Hearing loss is not always the result of a sudden shattering burst of sound or overexposure to above a threshold of 80 decibel sound level over time. Quite frankly, decibels don?t just describe a measure of loudness which is what we receive but also the force of the sound vibration. This is how, at the physical level, hearing damage and subsequent loss can occur as the result of a sudden blow to the head or ear or similar vibration related event that causes a rupture to the ear drum.

On one hand, such an event can occur from an explosion, although we perceive it as auditory, it is indeed a harmful physical blow to the inner ear receptors, the eardrum and the ability to perceive sign thereafter. On the other hand, much of the physical damage to the inner ear has been known to occur as the result of a foreign object such as a Q-tip, ear plug and even moments when a bug has entered the ear canal. There are moments when a genuine strike to the head has occurred sadly as the result of an altercation, as the result of a traumatic accident or during the performance of one of many types of athletic activities. These injuries require a proper hearing test because they can cause long term damage, permanent loss or a particular disorder known as tinnitus, without repair or support.

First, a hearing test for physical damage can be seen from an external exam but additional tests are often required in order to determine the resulting damage and how it can be repaired or supplemented for hearing improvement. For physical damage an audiologists has a certain hearing test that helps to not only exam the physical components the ear that have been damaged but the range of hearing as a result so he or she will check to see what the patient can hear then a CT scan of the head and MRI of the brain may be required for the neurological component of the ability to process sound. And this is where one of the many forms of tinnitus may have also affected a person?s ability to properly perceive sound.

Whether a patient has diminished hearing as the result of physical damage or can?t hear properly past one of the many noise producing forms of tinnitus. But the goal of treatment is to slow or halt further damage or auditory loss as well as improve communication for each patient. Whether he or she benefits from hearing aids or not, testing allows for patients to learn coping skills such as lip reading and how to utilize their assistance devices with gradual socialization. Most importantly, testing and treatment protect the ears and hearing processes from further damage which includes the patient learning how to avoid certain recreational activities that include strikes to the head or ear (boxing), or shooting a gun, loud mechanical equipment, loud music, etc. Protecting the ears is about being aware of the risks from this day forward and making decisions according to one?s comfort.

Global Markets: The Most-Searched Countries on Realtor.com ...

Realtor.com helps connect millions of people to fresh and accurate listings for millions of homes in the United States. But did you know that your property searches don?t have to be limited to within the U.S.?

We went global last year with the debut of Realtor.com International, which has since grown to include property listings in dozens of countries around the world. In keeping with the ?Hottest in Real Estate? theme, we took a look at the most-searched countries over the last month, and you might be surprised to learn what parts of the world are the most coveted ? at least, in terms of real estate.

France

What?s not to like about the French Republic? A m?nage of thriving metropolises and rolling country sides, France boasts world-class sights, museums, beaches and parks. And if you?re a lover of culinary cuisine and the arts, you?d be hard-pressed to find a better place to indulge. It?s just a few of many reasons that France is one of the top most-searched countries on Realtor.com International.

Mexico

As a frequenter of the Sonoran fishing town known as Puerto Pe?asco, I can attest to the simple beauty and rustic charm that Mexico has to offer. With a vibrant culture, deep-rooted cuisine and a wealth of natural wonders, it comes as no surprise that global investors are looking to places like Baja California, Sonora and Yucatan for vacation properties.

Costa Rica

I can think of far worse places to live than in the Caribbean, and apparently many of you agree because Costa Rica is one of the top-searched countries on Realtor.com International. So what might your Costa Rica search yield on Realtor.com International? How about beautiful oceanfront homes, lush mountain properties and even a few architectural masterpieces like this one in San Jose.

Italy

From the Roman ruins to the canals of Venice to the wondrous architecture of Florence, Italy has long been a top destination for global travelers, and it?s also one of the most-searched countries in terms of real estate. Whether you?re looking for a hilltop villa or vineyard estate in the countryside, or perhaps an oceanfront property on the beach of San Vito lo Capo, Realtor.com International has your Italy real estate search covered.

Canada

Well well, what do we have here? Locking down the top spot on Realtor.com International?s most-searched countries is none other than our friends to the north, Canada. The world?s second-largest country by total area, Canada is about as diverse as they come, with a host of cultures from around the world converging to create dynamic metropolitan areas like Montreal, Quebec, Toronto and Vancouver. ?Because there are no restrictions on non-residents purchasing real in Canada, the North American country has become a popular place for vacation home seekers and international real estate investors.

Proper Mindset For Pursuing And Building A Multilevel Marketing ...

For many people, network marketing is viewed as a promising new field. For some people, it is simply how they pay their bills. If you are willing to dedicate yourself and remain focused, it is possible to bring in a steady income.

Devote a majority of your network marketing resources towards building new client relationships, because this will ensure that your network brings in profits. Your MLM goal is to get new leads and customers. You have limits when focusing on your inner circle of family and friends. By bringing in clients from outside, you open doors to many other possibilities.

Create interesting and informative videos and place them on your website to draw a broader audience to your multi-level marketing site. Videos give you the chance to present a content-rich marketing strategy very cheaply, all you have to do is host the video file.

When discussing a possible lead, only use positive gestures like nodding your head. Keep your body language positive too. )

Do not take any shortcuts when you are doing multilevel marketing, mistakes will make you lose out on profits. You may be tempted to cut corners, but the only path to a successful marketing campaign is by putting in the time and effort. When you have chosen to create a quality work product, you will likely see great results.

You need to have a deep understanding of the product which you are promoting. If you are indifferent about the product you are selling, you won?t be able to trigger the emotional response that leads to a purchase. You must really give off the feeling that you are an expert in what you do, and that you truly love your job.

Do not neglect to allocate time to spend with your family and friends. Not only will this help reduce stress, it will also help you maintain healthy relationships. Your business will initially require a significant time investment; however, as your success grows, find time to spend with your loved ones.

Don?t let working online affect your efficiency. The internet is full of distractions. Develop a schedule and stick to so you can have more focus on your work.

Duplicate success at every opportunity. Analyze what people in your upline, and the best performers in your organization have been doing. Follow in the footsteps of others to develop a successful attitude or approach to build your business. Imitating individuals who are successful will only bring you closer to the top. You don?t only have to learn from your own success or failures.

There isn?t a person alive who doesn?t enjoy a great deal! If your multilevel marketing program makes coupons available that you can give to your customers, take full advantage of the opportunity. You can use the coupons as prizes for a special event, send them randomly for participation, or just hand them out to everyone who is willing to buy a product. The chance to save some money will make potential customers more interested in buying a product.

There is a natural instinct to talk about yourself. You should use this to your advantage and allow your customer to take the opportunity and tell you about his or her life. You should always refrain from telling him or her too much information about yourself. Project the image of a good, trustworthy listener and let them lead the conversation.

Try and illustrate to your leads that you want them to succeed as much as they do, whenever you are explaining your multilevel marketing campaign. Convince them that the system will improve their life by bringing them peace and money.

You should be prepared to listen to what other network marketers have learned. The best method of doing this in today?s age is through podcasts. Listen to different ones to find the best one available.

Starting off from a business plan will get you much better results. You should plan for goals, and design ways to meet them. Give yourself firm targets for the numbers of customers and sales you want to have, and plan ahead about the kind of marketing campaign will be required.

Through all these various types of media and social connections, you now have a way to market your ideas or products without hitting a stop. There are always upstarts coming onto the Internet scene who want to make their brand a household name. Following these tips will lead you to creating a marketing empire!

Researchers discover genetic basis for eczema, new avenue to therapies

Dec. 21, 2012 ? Researchers at Oregon State University have announced the discovery of an underlying genetic cause of atopic dermatitis, a type of eczema most common in infancy that also affects millions of adults around the world with dry, itchy and inflamed skin lesions.

The findings were just published in PLoS ONE, a professional journal, and may set the stage for new therapeutic approaches to this frustrating syndrome, which is difficult to treat and has no known cure. Eczema is also related to, and can sometimes cause asthma, a potentially deadly immune dysfunction.

Pharmaceutical scientists at OSU found in laboratory studies that eczema can be triggered by inadequate Ctip2, a protein and master regulator that affects other genetic functions. They have identified two ways in which improper function of Ctip2 can lead to eczema.

In a recent publication, they found that Ctip2 controls lipid biosynthesis in the skin, the fats that are needed to help keep skin healthy and hydrated. In the new study, they discovered that Ctip2 suppresses TSLP, a cytokine protein produced by skin cells that can trigger inflammation.

Levels of this inflammatory TSLP, which is ordinarily undetectable in human skin, were found to be 1,000 times higher in laboratory animals that had been genetically modified to have no Ctip2 production in their skin.

"In these studies, we've basically shown that inadequate Ctip2 is reducing the lipids in skin that it needs to stay healthy, protect itself and perform its function," said Arup Indra, an associate professor in the OSU College of Pharmacy. "At the same time this can allow unwanted formation of proteins that trigger inflammation. The skin's ability to resist inflammation is going down just as the amount of inflammation is going up, and the underlying reason is that Ctip2 is not doing its job."

"Either or both of these problems can lead to eczema," Indra said.

Atopic dermatitis is associated with a dysfunctional immune response, but researchers have never understood the underlying cause. Existing treatments use moisturizers to try to protect skin, and in difficult cases powerful steroid drugs can help, but they often have significant unwanted side effects, especially in long-term use.

"With a better understanding of just what is causing eczema on a genetic basis, we should be able to personalize treatments, determine exactly what each person needs, and develop new therapies," Indra said. "This might be with topical compounds that increase Ctip2 expression in skin cells, or customized treatments to restore an individual person's lipid profile. In the future, systemic epigenetic modification might even be possible."

The creation at OSU of the laboratory model to study this issue is also of considerable importance, Indra said. There's evidence it could be used to screen for drugs with potent anti-inflammatory activities.

Eczema is a persistent skin rash that can be fairly common in infants or youth, which some research indicates may be linked to food or pollen allergens. Most people outgrow it as they reach adulthood, but some suffer from the debilitating condition their entire life.

"Our skin is the largest organ in the human body and one of the most important," Indra said. "It's our first barrier of defense, is in a constant battle against external insults, is influenced by both genetics and the environment, and has to be finely tuned to do many jobs. In eczema, this process begins to break down."

Eczema allows significant loss of fluids through the skin, allows allergens to penetrate, and in severe cases can cause a systemic inflammatory response.

N. Charleston mayor wants police in elementary schools

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said?he plans to ask council members to authorize him to hire full time police officers for elementary schools in the city following the deadly?shooting at a Connecticut elementary school that took the lives of?20 children.?

"I've started talking with council members. Thursday night at council, I'll be requesting they authorize me to hire 21 police officers," Summey said on Tuesday. "A very expensive proposition that will give us the opportunity to put a full time police officer in every elementary school in the City of North Charleston."

Students at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. returned to class with tightened security and families still on edge on Tuesday following last week's school massacre where?20 children were shot to death by a gunman along with six adults at?the school.

"My heart just sank when I saw what can happen in a very short period of time," Summey said."I could not live with myself if something happened at one of our elementary schools and we had not done something to prevent it."

As it stands right now, SROs or school resource officers are stationed only at North Charleston high schools and middle schools.? Sgt. Kathi Love of the North Charleston Police Department said officers can provide additional security, as well as build a rapport with students.

"I think it's always important to teach that at the younger age - that the police [aren't] always there to arrest," Sgt. Love said.? "It's important for kids to know that we're there for everything."

According to Summey, the estimated cost of the police officers at the elementary schools for the first year would be $2 million and the cost the following year would be $1.5 million.

"Having raised our own children and knowing what they each mean to us and now these grandchildren, the most vulnerable of all of our children in our school system is our elementary children," Summey said.

General Electric X600

The GE X600 ($199.99 direct) is an inexpensive superzoom camera with an impressive 26x zoom lens, a quality eye-level EVF, and a sharp lens. Given its features it's priced at a bargain, but keep in mind that the 14-megapixel camera is slower to start, image quality suffers as you increase the ISO setting, and its 1080p video quality isn't the best in the world. If you don't need such an ambitious zoom or an EVF you'll find that the Canon SX260 HS is a better camera that's currently selling for around the same price.

Design and Features
The X600 takes it design cues from larger superzoom cameras like our Editors' Choice Panasonic FZ200 thanks to its deep handgrip, big lens, and eye-level EVF, but it manages a more compact package. The X600 measures 3.1 by 4.1 by 2.9 inches (HWD) and weighs 12.5 ounces. The FZ200 is larger and heavier at 3.4 by 4.9 by 4.3 inches and 1.3 pounds.

The 26x zoom lens covers an impressive 26-676mm f/3.2-5.6 (35mm equivalent) range. It exceeds the zoom range of the similarly styled and priced Olympus SP-620UZ?its 21x zoom lens starts at 25mm, but only zooms to 525mm.

The rear LCD is 2.7 inches, but is a little bit on the soft side due to its low 230k-dot resolution. There's no hard protective cover, so some care should be taken when stowing the camera in your bag?you don't want to damage or scratch the LCD accidentally. Separating itself from other cameras in this price range, the X600 does have an eye-level electronic viewfinder. It's especially useful for zoomed shots, as it makes it possible to hold the camera closer to your body to get a steadier shot. GE doesn't publish the resolution for the EVF, but it is acceptably sharp.

Physical controls are ample. There's a mode dial on the top, as well as buttons to start video recording and to control the Drive Mode. The rear of the camera features buttons to adjust Exposure Compensation, change the autofocus area, enable macro shooting, control the flash output, and activate the self timer.

There are a number of shooting modes built into the camera. You'll have access to Automatic, Manual, Program, and Shutter Priority modes?although there is no Aperture Priority mode available. You also get Face Beautifier (which softens features), a panoramic shooting mode, and a black-and-white mode directly from the dial, and a number of scene modes (including Fireworks, Pets, and Snow) can be access via a software menu.

Performance and ConclusionsGeneral Electric X600 : Benchmark Tests
The X600 is a slow camera to start and to fire. It requires about 4 seconds to start and shoot and records a 0.4-second shutter lag. In Continuous Drive mode it can shoot at an impressive 6.5 frames per second. The Olympus SP-620UZ starts faster?it boots in 1.9 seconds and notches a 0.2-second shutter lag, but is limited to snapping a full-resolution photo once every 1.3 seconds at maximum resolution.

I used Imatest to check the sharpness of images captured by the X600. The camera records 1,842 lines per picture height, which is better than the 1,800 lines required for a sharp photo. In terms of noise, which can harm image detail, the X600 keeps it under 1.5 percent through ISO 800?but it would appear that it does so via some overzealous noise reduction. If you can keep the camera set to ISO 400 or lower your images will look better, especially when printed, but ISO 800 will work for sharing on the Web.

Video is recorded in 1080p30 or 720p60 quality in QuickTime format. I recommend grabbing footage at the lower 720p60 resolution?the faster frame rate helps to reduce the evidence of the rolling shutter effect, which is very troublesome at 1080p30. It shows up when there is motion in your frame or if you pan the camera?the top half of your video moves more quickly than the bottom half, giving footage a bit of a rubber pencil effect. The camera can zoom in or out when recording, and you can hear the lens moving as it does so?there's no mic input, so there's no way around this. There's a micro HDMI port to connect to an HDTV, and a micro USB port that allows you to plug the camera into your computer for data transfer or into the included AC adapter for battery charging. Like most point-and-shoots, the camera uses SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards.

When you consider its features and asking price, the GE X600 represents a good value?with some compromises. Its video and image quality isn't spectacular, but still images are good at lower ISOs and acceptable through ISO 800. It's slow to start and shoot, but can fire off shots in rapid succession. The rear LCD is so-so in terms of quality, but the eye-level EVF is better than I'd expect from a $200 camera. If you don't need an EVF, the compact Canon SX260 HS is currently selling for the same price (down from its original $350 asking price) and is a better camera overall, but budget shooters who are looking for a long zoom camera with eye-level framing capability should consider the X600?just make sure to understand its weak points.

Planning my wedding in the Outer Banks/Virginia Beach

Dear Community,

?

I am looking to have my wedding summer of 2014 in the Outer Banks NC or Virginia Beach. Instead of having all my friends and family get hotel rooms (we live primarily in Philadelphia) I would like to rent two large ocean front properties to put everyone up for the weekend! I am looking for two houses that can sleep around 20-30 people preferably next to one another or atleast on the same block where I can have all my family and friends together for our perfect beach wedding weekend. If anyone has properties like this available I would love to talk to you about renting them and maybe coming to see them.

Another question, if there are any other happily married couples who have done a similar wedding in the outer banks or virginia beach and have some advice I would love to hear about it!

?

feel free to contact me by phone or email any time

Thank you!

Liz Christy

Real Estate Weekly ? Blog Archive ? Brokers help Sandy victims find ...

Matt Rosenstein (pictured) and Nick Kurczewski?s ground-floor apartment near the South Street Seaport was severely flooded during Hurricane Sandy.

Matt Rosenstein and Nick Kurczewski?were in love with their neighborhood near the South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan.

On the night of Oct. 29, a 1,000-mile wide hurricane tried to change that.

?It was unreal,? recalled Kurczewski. ?The wind and rain started, it was wet and windy, and then a wall of water rolled in.?

Residents for three years in a ground floor apartment on Front Street, the happy couple ?knew everyone? and had built strong ties with the community.

They were looking forward to tying the knot in early December.

The couple had headed for higher ground prior to the storm, staying with a friend nearby on Water Street. As the storm raged, the water level rose rapidly, foot by foot.

Kurczewski remembers watching in disbelief as mannequins from the Abercrombie & Fitch retail store across the street floated by, bobbing around in the?flood waters?after the doors to the store burst open.

The two bounced from friend to friend for a week or two following the hurricane, all in all staying in six different places before finding a short-term rental on 58th Street, between 5th and 6th avenues.

When they went back to survey the damage, they waded through knee deep water in their water-ravaged apartment.

?I just had to know how bad it was,? he said. ?We went back the next morning and discovered six to seven feet of water had turned our apartment into a toxic soup.?

Their sofa was upended on a dresser and an overturned coffee table, the bedroom wall had blown down and kitchen items had somehow settled in the bedroom.

A water line was visible around the walls of the apartment.

Though devastated, the neighborhood stood together.

?The community came together fantastically,? said Kurczewski. ?Unfortunately, our management company did not.?

The couple?s management company initially told them they wanted to rebuild and get them back in their apartment within 30-45 days.

Two weeks later, they changed their tune and said they were terminating their lease and would be turning their apartment into retail space.

They were given 72 hours to decide if they were going to leave, or take a similar fourth floor walk-up in the same building for $800 more than their previous rent.

Instead, the couple chose to stay in a short-term rental and look for a new place in the Seaport.

Bridget A. Schuy

Bridget Schuy, a broker with BOND and a good friend of the couple?s, lives nearby in the neighborhood.

?I had just cooked them dinner on Saturday night,? she said.

After learning of their frustration with trying to find a broker, Schuy said she asked Kurczewski if she could send him some listings.

?I went to work immediately,? she said. ?I felt like, if I can?t help my friends, who can I help??

Schuy knew the couple wanted to stay in the neighborhood they loved and had become such a part of, but since the area took such a beating from Sandy, it was tough to even look at any places.

?It was a task,? she said. ?The listing brokers did not want to show me the apartment because the neighborhood was so trashed. Several brokers I worked with in the Seaport just stopped showing completely.?

However, she worked hard and was able to find the couple a new home at 275 Water Street.

?We decided we wanted to move back to the Seaport. We didn?t want to be in the city if it wasn?t our neighborhood,? said Kurczewski. ?For better or worse, this is our home.?

They were even able to stick with their original wedding date, moving into their new apartment just hours before getting hitched on Dec. 8.

?I give kudos to Bridget for making a happy ending out of all of this,? said Kurczewski. ?It has been quite a few weeks, it?s been six weeks now, it seems like months.?

For others still looking for permanent homes after losing their apartments due to Sandy, the most recent numbers show rental market prices have eased, but vacancy has declined sharply.

In the weeks following the hurricane, rental activity dropped 69.8 percent in Lower Manhattan zip codes hit hardest by Sandy, compared to the same period a year ago, according to Jonathan Miller, president of appraisal firm Miller Samuel.

According to a market report published Dec. 12 by Miller, in Manhattan, the median rental price remained almost unchanged in November from the prior month and rose 1.4% higher than prior year levels to $3,195.

Average rental prices grew 5.4% from the same period last year, while rental price per square foot fell 2.3%.

The Manhattan vacancy rate fell to 1.59% from 2.32% from the same time last year.

Aash Jethra, a broker with Citi Habitats, helped a client re-locate to midtown east after her FiDi apartment building, 2 Gold Street, was rendered uninhabitable following the storm.

?She was quite stressed out,? he said. ?She lived on the fourteenth floor, and she?couldn?t?get up there early on after the hurricane.?

The parking garage under the building had been severely flooded, and once the water receded, oil from waterlogged cars seeped up through the elevator shafts of the building.

?The smell was very strong,? he said. ?All her clothes smelled. There was just this freezing cold, dark apartment.?
Jethra had to move quickly.

By gaging what kind of apartment was the right fit for her, he was able to find a rental on 53rd and 2nd in record time.

?We signed a lease at 9 o?clock at night,? said Jethra.

Since Sandy, short-term and ?Sandy-friendly? listings have popped up on real estate sites, said Jethra.

?It?s on people?s minds in the brokerage community,? he said. ?People are aware the market has shifted because of it, and so some people act.?
