Sprint almost bought MetroPCS for $8 billion, Hesse said yes, but the board said no (update)

Well, well, it looks like AT&T wasn't the only one looking to acquire a competitor in the wireless business last year. According to CNBC's David Faber, the Now Network was knee-deep in negotiations to acquire MetroPCS for $8 billion dollars before its board nixed the deal. Apparently, Sprint had been trying to make the merger happen for months and the coupling was even endorsed by CEO Dan Hesse, but for reasons unknown the board shot it down. We're still digging for details, so stay tuned for more as we have it.

Update: The Wall Street Journal reports that Sprint backed away from the deal earlier this week because the "timing wasn't right," and that there's no hard feelings between Mr. Hesse and the board for doing so.

I have been a human resources gurut for several years, and the one talent or competency that continues to ruin leaders is a lack of managerial courage. This would possibly not be a familiar term, so permit me to explain?

There is a boss or employee in your organization who is legendary for only seeing what does not work. They never seem to be around when things are going well or when anyone comes up with a great idea. They seem to be able to identify issues very fast, but they're not as fast to reveal solutions or maybe make ideas.

These people usually don?t go to the source to make a complaint. They to turn to others in the office,? perhaps recruiting supporters? to share the data with their ideas or fears. They?re shifting your culture and undermining authority while they recruit. They also are always pointing the finger of culpability elsewhere. They have become your corporate ?Teflon? employee. Most companies have one of those.

These people always attempt to be on the side of popular opinion, at least in public. They really do not like taking a tough stand. These are the folks that agree in conferences and then have a totally different opinion in the corridor.

These are all features of those with a lack of managerial courage. I?m sure you recognize this in several people, but who knew it was regarded as having a label? ! Now you can put it in behavioural terms and performance manage it out of existence. This is dealt with and modeled through your organization, and it is way easier than you would possibly think.

Here are 8 Things That You Can Do to Develop Managerial Courage:

1. Ensure you have all the information you need about the issue. Have your ducks in a row, for nothing is better than credibility more than flawed info.

2. Make sure you give the data to the individual that can handle it. Don't share your thoughts with others.

3. If you have a tough message to deliver, don?t go off in another area in the conversation. Get to the point. Folks are smart; they?d like to know what is occurring, so say it directly and with respect. Of course , ?Managerial courage comes in search of a better result, not destroying others.? [1]

4. Make certain that you have a solution to provide. It isn?t helpful to complain without showing that you have worked out a likely alternative.

5. Ensure you psychologically get ready for what feelings you can bring out. Use your HR staff, manager or coach to plan your success strategy. Do not be caught off guard and appear unready or doubtful.

6. Timing is vital. Issues are best dealt with quickly , although not always when emotions are high.

7. Is this private? Do you find yourself always at the brunt of issues? Is it your style to be dubious? Make sure you understand your motives.

8. Keep an unblinkered attitude. You may hear new information that adds a different dimension. Remember this is a dialogue that is leading to a new action.

These are merely a few tips on moving towards managerial courage. It needs time and requires support to build, but it?s worthwhile. The reality is? You cannot be an effective leader without it!

Sunshine Coast Council today adopted a Master Plan for the Ballinger Park Sports Complex which is an integral sport and recreation facility servicing the Buderim precinct and Sunshine Coast community.

Division 6 Councillor Christian Dickson said the Ballinger Sports Complex Master Plan is intended to provide a 15 year vision for the complex, identifying what it should look like and how it should function into the future.
?
?The intent of the master plan is to guide and inform staged development and provides a framework for strategies to improve overall recreation opportunities for users of the complex," Cr Dickson said.
?
?At each stage of the master planning process, extensive internal and external consultation was undertaken to engage wider community members.
?
?It is important to note the master plan acknowledges the significant population growth in the area and the increasing demands for quality sport and recreation facilities by the community."

Key recommendations of the master plan include:
?

• a regional hockey centre with the capacity to host and attract high standard events by the provision for a second synthetic hockey/multi-use field;
• a regional archery centre with the capacity to attract and host international events (subject to detailed design outcomes);
• increasing the capacity for cricket, soccer and hockey;
• recognition of the need for additional tennis courts within the facility;
• increased parking accessibility for users;

Department of Computing Science, is looking for outstanding candidates for 2 PhD student positions within the field of distributed (grid and cloud) computing. The group?s research, study is focused on the design and analysis of methods, algorithms, and systems for service-oriented grid and cloud infrastructures.?

Existing and future topics of research interest include:?

• Architectures for distributed and federated grid and clouds?
• Scheduling and resource brokering of virtual machines, jobs, and data?
• Job and workflow management?
• Autonomic service elasticity?
• Admission control for safe resource overbooking?
• Distributed monitoring, accounting, and quota enforcement?
• Tools for management of compute and data intense applications?
• Holistic system management based on business level objectives?
• Efficient use of virtualization techniques, including live migration?
• Design principles for distributed applications?

The research is carry out in an international and creative environment now comprising 17 persons of 6 nationalities. We work within large scale national and international projects, including national strategic research projects (e.g., eSSENCE) and EU FP7 financially supported by projects (e.g., RESERVOIR, OPTIMIS, VISION Cloud) in close teamwork with major industrial (such as, IBM, SAP, and Atos Origin) and academic partners.?

Software is contributed to a variety of open source community efforts including NorduGrid/ARC and the Globus Toolkit, the concluding as a member of the Globus Academic Affiliate Program. The group is also a member of the NESSI workgroup on service-oriented infrastructure. The research is performed in collaboration with the High Performance Computing Center North (HPC2N) and the UMIT research laboratory at Ume? University. HPC2N is a member center of the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC), providing skill and computing resources, including grid resources. HPC2N actively takes part in Swegrid, NDGF, NorduGrid and EGEE. UMIT is an environment for interdisciplinary research in scientific, high-performance, distributed, real-time, and visual computing, in addition to their industrial applications.?

Information about the positions:

The positions are aimed and its goal for PhD studies and research to be performed mutually with group members and collaboration associates, leading to a PhD degree. The positions include a competitive pay for a period of four years of research time, provided that expected study and research results are achieved. The position may also include part-time work (up to 20%) as teaching assistant. If so, the total time for the position is extended accordingly (up to a maximum of five years). Of keenly interest for the positions are mostly the following two directions of research.?

Construction and application of effective, practical virtual infrastructures for scientific computations. Scientific computations come in many forms. Applications ranging from large-scale, synchronized, memory-bound engineering setbacks to data-parallel data analysis problems demonstrate the assortment of modern scientific computations. As different types of scientific computations perform in a different way, the characteristics of the underlying computational infrastructure applications are run on can very much affect the efficiency of computational applications. In this eSSENCE-funded project, construction and application of virtual infrastructures (i.e. software systems) for scientific computations is studied.?

Example projects for prospective, potential students within this field include, but are not limited to, adaptation of applications and development of software systems for management of computations in new types of distributed resource environments, e.g., grid and cloud computing environments, in addition to analysis and (re)formulation of computational problems in application areas (e.g., systems biology and medicine) for improved aptitude to use current infrastructures. For these projects, knowledge of applications in computational science is meriting.?

Cloud computing:

The overall, in general research lines focus on management challenges for data centers (clouds) and the services provisioned in these. Prospective research topics range from enabling technologies such as hardware virtualization and power-aware server management, to data center management problems for instance admission control, placement (scheduling), and proactive elasticity, to higher-level concerns such as novel design patterns and programming paradigms for the construction of future cloud-native applications.?

Eligibility:

Applicants are expected to hold a Master of Science degree in computer science or a related field. As well as outstanding study results, distinction in systems development, software engineering practices, and expertise in modern programming languages and software development tools are expected. Strong systems skills with in-depth understanding of grid computing, cloud computing, high-performance computing, high-throughput computing, and/or other types of distributed systems are highly valuable. Experience of open source environments and from software or research-oriented industry are other attractive merits. Important personal abilities are coordination and organization skills in addition to good communication skills in written and spoken English.?

Formal prerequisites include either (i) 240 ECTS credits (Swe. H?gskolepo?ng) of higher education studies of which as a minimum 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level) in computer science or similar relevant field, or (ii) 160 Swedish (old) credits (Swe. Po?ng; corresponding to 240 ECTS credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007, or equivalent proficiency. The method for recruitment for the positions is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (chap. 12, 2 ?) and the decision regarding the position cannot be appealed.?

Saleh's deputy becomes new Yemen president

SANAA/ADEN, Yemen?? A general took power in Yemen on Tuesday as the sole candidate in a presidential election after a year-long uprising that ousted long-serving ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh but left the poor Arab country still teetering on the brink of chaos.

The election confirms Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who served as Saleh's vice president and close confidant, as president. He is tasked with implementing a power-sharing deal with Saleh's political opponents under an agreement negotiated to remove Saleh after 33 years in power.

Yemen's uprising was one of the bloodiest of the revolts that have swept across North Africa and the Middle East. Saleh becomes the fourth Arab autocrat toppled in the wave of unrest that began in Tunisia more than a year ago. His sons and nephews retain command of powerful military units and security agencies.

In a reminder of the daunting task his successor faces holding Yemen together, at least nine people were killed in election-related violence that cut voting short in southern Yemen, where separatists demanded an election boycott.

"Elections are the only exit route from the crisis which has buffeted Yemen for the past year," Hadi said after voting.

Minibuses plastered with posters of Hadi and decked out with speakers sped around the capital Sanaa blaring out pop songs to shouts of "Vote to Save Yemen."

Saleh, now in the United States for treatment of burns suffered in an assassination attempt last June, joins Tunisia's Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, Egypt's Hosni Mubarak and Libya's Moammar Gadhafi as leaders toppled in the "Arab Spring."

He leaves behind an economy in shambles, a rebellion in the north, separatism in the south, a tenacious wing of al-Qaida, and a divided military still partly dominated by his kin.

Long queues formed early in the morning outside polling stations in Sanaa amid tight security, after an explosion ripped through a voting center in the southern port city of Aden on the eve of the vote.

"We are now declaring the end of the Ali Abdullah Saleh era and will build a new Yemen," prominent Yemeni human rights activist Tawakul Karman, who shared this year's Nobel Peace Prize, said as she waited to cast her ballot outside a Sanaa university faculty.

Voters dipped their thumbs in ink and stamped their finger prints on a ballot paper bearing a picture of Hadi and a map of Yemen in the colors of the rainbow.

Yellow taxis careened through Sanaa with young men sticking their arms out of the windows waving their freshly dyed thumbs.

Turnout hit by violence
A high turnout would lend Hadi the legitimacy he needs to carry out changes outlined in the U.S.-backed power transfer deal brokered by Yemen's Gulf neighbors, including the drafting of a new constitution, restructuring the armed forces and preparing for multi-party elections in two years' time.

Turnout, which one official estimated was as high as 80 percent, was hit by violence in Aden, where an election organizer said attacks forced voting to end by mid-afternoon.

"There was a boycott, and when those who were boycotting found they weren't winning they turned to resistance and seized ballot boxes and stormed polling places," Mohammed Hussein al-Hakimi told reporters in Sanaa. He said final election results could take as long as 10 days to emerge.

Election committee official Khamis al-Dayani earlier said nine of some 300 large polling districts were unable to begin voting for security reasons, and that an election official had been killed in the southern city of Taiz.

Southerners, who accuse the north of grabbing their resources and discriminating against them, are demanding a divorce from the north. The two regions were separate countries until they were united in 1990, and fought a civil war in 1994.

Security forces fired on protesters throwing stones during an anti-election rally in front of a polling station in al-Hota, the capital of the southern Lahej province, killing two, witnesses and local officials said.

An officer from the Republican Guards and an armed secessionist were also killed during clashes in the port city of al-Makalla, capital of Hadramout governorate, officials said.

The streets of Aden were nearly deserted and intermittent gunfire could be heard. Masked youths carrying rifles and machine guns patrolled junctions, preventing people from reaching polling stations.

Gunmen attacked voting centers in the districts of Khor Maksar, Mansoura and Maala in the Aden vicinity at dawn, killing one soldier, residents said. They stole ballot boxes and set them on fire in the street.

A leader in the Southern Movement, Abdulhamid Shokri, said four civilians including a child had died in Aden since the morning as a result of clashes between security forces and people opposed to the election.

Partners in crime
The northwest of the country is largely controlled by an insurgent group known as Houthis, whom Saleh tried to crush before a cease-fire in 2010. They have expanded their territory as central government authority crumbled, and called for a boycott of the vote.

"These are not real elections, it is just formalizing the American-backed GCC initiative which aimed to control the Yemeni revolution," said Dayfallah al-Shami of the Houthis' leadership council, referring to the Gulf Cooperation Council regional group of states. "It is just a reproduction of the same regime."

The vote was supported by the United States and Yemen's rich neighbors led by Saudi Arabia, who - alarmed at signs of al-Qaida exploiting political upheaval to strengthen its regional foothold - threw their weight behind the power transfer deal.

But the poll was denounced in advance by some of the youth activists who first took to the streets to demand Saleh's ouster. They regard the transfer plan as a pact among an elite they see as partners to the crimes of Saleh's tenure, including the killings of protesters in the uprising against him.

Some demonstrators dyed their thumbs red in protest at the elections and in memory of those killed during the uprising.

The interim government faces a fiscal and humanitarian crisis, and has sought billions of dollars in international aid since unrest has all but paralysed modest oil exports that fund imports of food staples.

Washington - which has said it wants a united Yemeni leadership as a partner in its campaign against al-Qaida - is likely to play a role in an impending donors' conference. Yemen is one of the countries that allow U.S. forces to use drone aircraft to strike al-Qaida militants.

The United Nations Children's Fund says 57 percent of Yemen's 12 million children are chronically malnourished - the highest level outside Afghanistan - and half a million face death or disfigurement from poor nutrition.

The U.N. envoy who helped seal the transition pact denounced the violence in the south as a violation of the Security Council resolution that echoes the deal's terms. He also called for donor cash to avert the collapse of the country.

"They need to step up to the mark and start supporting Yemen if they want to see it survive the transition. The government is still financially crippled," said Jamal Benomar.

"Expectations are high and if people do not see some improvement in their daily lives, then further unrest is a serious possibility."

If you sell products, avoid making claims of what the product can do in an effort to garner sales. Openly tell your customers what they need to know and give them the facts. It?s much better to understate claims and allow the product to surpass or exceed your customer?s expectations rather than to make exaggerated claims that are unfounded and unsupported.

Once you have raised someone?s expectations, if you or your products fail to live up to those expectations, you?ve essentially lost your customer as well as any measure of credibility you may have had in their eyes.

Always keep in mind that studies indicate that a satisfied customer will tell one friend, but a dissatisfied one tells nine friends. Social media makes it possible to share your dissatisfaction with a lot more than 3,000 with just a few clicks of the mouse.

Even if your customers are not active on social media, reaching large numbers of people is not hard to do when you consider that your friends all have friends with whom they share things and each of those have friends with whom they?ll gladly share bad experiences.? This may be in an attempt to protect their friends from any type of dishonesty that was experienced.

Once your customer suspects or confirms that you are dishonest, the trust is broken and you will lose him or her in a heartbeat.? Any short-term gain will be lost and rebuilding trust and loyalty is a long, uphill battle that every business owner, large or small, wants to avoid. Honesty in customer service is the best way and it builds trust and loyalty.

For the past years since I have been turning pens I have been involved with an endeavour created by a special friend of mine.

The 2nd pic contains 32 Flat Top Ballpoint Pens in a variety of woods as well.

Each pen pack contains a replacement ink cartridge along with a letter of appreciation to the Peacekeeper thanking them for their contribution to our country.

This group of pens, 43 in total were turned by yours truly over the past couple of months. They were presented to the co-ordinator of the project along with another 27 turned by the Durham Woodworking Club in Oshawa ON in a small ceremony on Feb. 4, 2012.

They are on their way now to our Canadian Peacekeepers for distribution as the Commander of a unit sees fit!

Photo Essay ? South Africa

In 2010 I had the pleasure of visiting South Africa as a guest of South Africa tourism. I visited the remote Kimberly Region in the North West Province, Cape Town and areas around Johannesburg. I was able to do and see many incredible things including: a live capture on a game farm, get in the water with Great White Sharks, see African Elephants, ride the Blue Train and take my first hot air balloon trip. While it was my first visit to South Africa, it certainly will not be my last. There are so much more of the country I haven?t explored yet.
