UK artist hits out at Christie's over stolen work

LONDON (Reuters) - Turner Prize-winning Scottish artist Douglas Gordon has criticized auction house Christie's after a solid gold sculpture was stolen from the auction house's London warehouse.

Gordon's 2007 "The Left Hand and the Right Hand Have Abandoned One Another" was reported missing by the world's biggest auction house on November 12 and is believed to have an insurance value of around 500,000 pounds ($800,000).

But Gordon complained that he was not informed about the theft until more than two weeks later.

"It looks like I am the last person in the chain to know," he told the Guardian newspaper, adding that he believed the work had been melted down for scrap value.

Christie's issued a statement in response to the complaint: "This matter is currently under investigation and we are in contact with all parties involved. We cannot comment further."

But a source at the auctioneer, whose headquarters are in central London, said the company had informed the artist's gallery and agent shortly after the police were called in.

The work was normally kept at Gordon's gallery in Paris, but had been on display at an exhibition organized by Christie's at Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, southern England.

Gordon was born in Glasgow in 1966 and was awarded the coveted Turner Prize for contemporary art in 1996. He lives and works in Berlin.

Department of Commerce renews VeriSign control of .com registry, demands price freeze

Department of Commerce renews VeriSign control of com registrations, demands a price freeze

In many ways, VeriSign has been one of the internet's true arbiters. It's ICANN's official registry operator for .com domains, which lets it determine how (and how much) we pay to get a particularly coveted address. As we're learning, the US Department of Commerce is only comfortable with that state of affairs to a certain point. It just approved a deal renewal that will let VeriSign watch over .com between December 1st this year and November 30th, 2018, but it's requiring that the company drop a previous right to hike registration prices as many as four times, at up to 7 percent, over the length of the term. The current $7.85 price will last unless VeriSign either faces exceptional circumstances or can prove that the market is healthy enough to lift the ceiling. We're sure the business isn't happy when the DOC move dictates how much money it can make, but compulsive domain hunters will enjoy the extra dollars in their pockets.

(AP Photo/The Capitol Times, Michelle Stocker.)

MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) ? Remember Roseanne Roseannadana? Or Emily Litella? Or Baba Wawa?

Younger generations might not recognize the characters popularized by comedienne Gilda Radner. Nor might they remember Radner herself, an original cast member of Saturday Night Live who died 23 years ago and for whom a national cancer support group is named.

That's troubling to the Madison-area chapter of Gilda's Club, which planned on Thursday to change its name in part because of concern that many don't know who Radner was. The move prompted outrage from some Radner fans, who see it as a slight to a woman who confronted cancer with dignity and humor, and led other chapters across the nation to hastily reaffirm they have absolutely no intention of changing their names.

Lannia Syren Stenz, the Madison-area club's executive director, said her organization decided to change its name to Cancer Support Community Southwest Wisconsin after it realized that most college students were born after Radner died in 1989.

"We are seeing younger and younger adults who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis," Stenz told the Wisconsin State Journal. "We want to make sure that what we are is clear to them and that there's not a lot of confusion that would cause people not to come in our doors."

Her comments angered some Radner fans, who let loose a storm of criticism on the organization's Facebook page.

"The only educating you're doing is teaching kids that when they die from cancer, their name will be erased from history in 20 years because the next generation doesn't know who they are. Way to give them hope!" wrote Mark Warneke, 44, a full-time college student in Arlington, Texas. He told the AP that taking Radner's name off the foundation was an insult to her memory.

Stenz referred questions from The Associated Press to Linda House, executive vice president of the national group. House said there was no evidence that young people are unfamiliar with Radner and the name change was motivated by the desire to make the organization's mission clear. She called Stenz's comments "not accurate, period."

"Gilda Radner is very much a part of the fiber of this organization," House said. "There has never been an intent and there is no intent to lose Gilda as part of the organization."

Radner, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986, sought support from The Wellness Community in California and wrote about her experience in her book "It's Always Something," a reference to one of her characters' catch-phrases.

Her friends and family started Gilda's Club in 1991 on the East Coast to honor her legacy. The name was inspired by something Radner said after her diagnosis: "Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club I'd rather not belong to."

Gilda's Club Worldwide merged with The Wellness Community in 2009, and the joint headquarters in Washington changed its name to the Cancer Support Community. Local chapters were given the choice of keeping their names or switching to Cancer Support Community, House said.

The 56 chapters around the world deliver $40 million a year in free care to about 1 million cancer patients and their families, she said. Of those chapters, 20 are known as Gilda's Club, three are Wellness Community and 23 are Cancer Support Community.

Changing the chapters' names made sense to Ron Nief, a professor at Beloit College in southern Wisconsin who has made a career out of studying how different generations view the world differently. He said it could become harder for Gilda's Club to attract donations as fewer people remember seeing Radner on TV.

"I think we all want to keep our traditions alive," he said, "but there comes a reality in this case of what does this group represent and how do we raise money for it."

Radner's husband, actor Gene Wilder, said he didn't like the name change but he understood it.

He said if he had to break the news to his late wife she might ask, "Do they have to throw me out?"

"I'd say, 'It's not throwing you out, honey, it's getting more money.' And she'd say, 'OK, I guess if they have to, they have to,'" he said. "It's too bad. I wish it weren't so. But I understand."

The Wellness Center where Radner once sought support in Los Angeles was one of the groups that updated its name. Julia Forth, the marketing director of what's now called the Cancer Support Community Benjamin Center, said people who get sick Google the word cancer, so it helps to have that word in the name.

Other organizations were adamant about keeping the Gilda's Club name. LauraJane Hyde, who runs the Chicago chapter, said her group has spent 15 years teaching people that Radner's name was synonymous with cancer support, in the same way people know what Starbucks sells even though "coffee" isn't in its name.

"A lot of people feel very passionately about the name," she said. "We will lose donations if we change it."

Radner remains a strong presence at the Madison-area club even without her name on the building in the suburb of Middleton. Paintings and drawings of Radner line the walls. One depicts her on top of Madison's state Capitol. Another imagines her sitting along the shores of Lake Mendota on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The meeting rooms are named after her Saturday Night Live characters, including New York-street smart reporter Roseanne Roseannadana, out-of-sync editorialist Emily Litella and speech-impeded talk show host Baba Wawa, a parody of Barbara Walters.

iPad Is Still The Number One Tablet But Android Is Catching Up

Apple?s iPad and Google?s Android tablets?are one of the best and most admired tablets so far . But the competition between these two tablets is also quite tough. One after other, their remarkable features just suppresses the enemy. Once again we?ve got another great news about these two old enemies. Although the total income for Apple was much more than any other tech company but still Android made its way and once again nailed the ground. Checkout all the details about this new war between iOS and Android.

There is no doubt that Apple?s iPad?s demand is rapidly increasing but Android is always there to catch up with Apple. This time Android has gained a huge chunk of market shares of Apple. This means it?s again a huge drawback for Apple. According to ABI research, iPad made a 55 percent of tablet shipments in the third quarter, which was about 14 percent lesser than the second quarter and this is the lowest revenue, since iPad has came in the market from 2010.

ABI researches also mentioned that there is a chance of increase in Google shares. The reasons for Apple?s loss are , Samsung, Ausus. Another reason is that Google?s mobile operating system now powers more than 44 percent of iPads shipped. The ABI Research?s Jeff Orr mentioned:

?As the OS of choice for the majority of device OEMs [original equipment manufacturers], we expect the Android ecosystem to continue growing in numbers ? new manufacturers, better device choices for reaching more markets, and more developers finding value from apps and content,?

Many analyst and commentators have predicted that there will be a constant increase in the popularity graph of Android. This means a great threat for Apple, now Apple have to once again prove itself by bring out more innovative products, which should nail the ground and prove that Apple will always be the top leading tech company.

Beating the dark side of quantum computing | Kuwait Info.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2012) ? A future quantum computer will be able to carry out calculations billions of times faster than even today?s most powerful machines by exploit the fact that the tiniest particles, molecules, atoms and subatomic particles can exist in more than one state simultaneously. Scientists and engineers are looking forward to working with such high-power machines but so too are cyber-criminals who will be able to exploit this power in cracking passwords and decrypting secret messages much faster than they can now.

Now, Richard Overill of the Department of Informatics at King?s College London is working in the field of digital forensics to develop the necessary tools to pre-empt the cyber-criminals as quantum computing becomes reality. Writing in the Int. J. Information Technology, Communications and Convergence, Overill explains that while quantum computing is in its infancy, as with earlier technological leaps once the nuts and bolts are in place, it will be adopted rapidly by computer scientists and others eager to utilise its enormous potential.

The technologies that will underpin quantum computing will be quite esoteric to the non-specialist and include laser-excited atomic ion traps using beryllium or calcium atoms, bulk liquid-phase and solid-phase nuclear magnetic resonance, as well superconducting solid-state circuits operating at liquid helium temperatures. Of course, the semiconductor, silicon chip technology underpinning current supercomputers is perhaps just as esoteric although seems more familiar to us now.

Nevertheless, it is not the complexities of the technology that is important but what it will allow computer users to do such as solving logistics problems by overlaying all possible solutions and allowing quantum mechanics to find the optimal route, for instance. Or creating encryption keys that could never be cracked by a conventional computer. And, as Overill warns, providing those intent on cracking passwords and such to apply computational brute force with immeasurable efficiency. Such power might be wielded by crime fighters and criminals alike.

?At first sight, therefore, it would appear that with the advent of practical quantum computers the task of cyber-law enforcement will become significantly more challenging,? says Overill. However, as has always been the case with crime and crime fighting, forensics constantly plays catch up with the technology exploited by criminals and so too with quantum computers. Overill provides a roadmap for how research into digital forensics must progress if crime fighters and investigators are to keep up with the pace of change.

Currently there is no answer to beating quantum crime. ?There are ultimate physical limitations on what forensic information can be recovered from a quantum computation,? says Overill. Forensic has always had such limitations but investigators are adept at obtaining clues regardless. ?So, our digital quantum forensics mission has to focus on learning how to get ?more from less?, by squeezing every last drop of information from the traces that can be recovered, and then devising novel techniques to interpret these traces as richly as possible.?

Jeff Zucker To CNN: Former NBCUniversal Chief Will Reportedly Head Time Warner's Cable News Network

By Peter Lauria and Lisa Richwine

LOS ANGELES, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Jeff Zucker, a former head of NBCUniversal and the producer of Katie Couric's talk show, will be named president of Time Warner Inc's ratings-starved CNN cable news channel, a source close to the situation said on Tuesday.

Zucker will succeed departing CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton, who said in July he was leaving the once-dominant news network after nine years in the job and a recent ratings slump.

The appointment of Zucker as the new president of CNN Worldwide will be announced by the end of next week, the source said.

CNN, founded in 1980 and now owned by Time Warner, has tried to hold the middle ground in its news coverage, a position that some blame for its ratings erosion, while ratings have risen for competitors Fox News and MSNBC, which blend news with opinion and political commentary.

iPhone 5 Release Date and Delivery: Apple Smartphone Sales Out-Do Android to Top Spot in U.S.

After Apple's big launch of the iPhone 5 in September, reports in November suggest that the sales of the latest iphone has put the Cupertino company back on the top spot in smartphone sales in the U.S. market, out beating Android.

According to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, a smartphone sales data provider, Apple currently has 48.1% share of US smartphone sales, while Android has 46.7%. ?

Dominic Sunnebo of Kantar Worldpanel ComTech told Patently Apple, "The last time we saw iOS overtake Android in the US was when the iPhone 4S was released and Apple managed to retain its lead for three consecutive periods. This time we predict that Apple will beat its previous high of 49.3% and achieve its highest ever share of the US smartphone market within the next two periods."

Like Us on Facebook

Meanwhile, Cult of Mac reports that iPhone 5 delivery is likely to take place sometime in early December. The delays were caused by production problems. According to the two Chinese companies that manufacture the product, Foxconn and Hon Hai Precision Industry, the enormous demand for the iPhone 5 is increasing pressure on the production. However, whether the high demand is the cause for the production delay is uncertain.

Hon Hai Precision Industry and Foxconn chairman Terry Gou told PC Mag, " Market demand is very strong, but we just can't really fulfill Apple's requests."

On Saturday, CNET reported that wireless providers indicated that the "ship-by-date" for the latest iPhone was listed as one week away, but the Apple website shows that production could take up to three or four weeks more.

BTIG Analyst Walter Piecyk told CNET, "Apple might be trying to induce their customers to reserve a phone for next day pick up at one of their retail stores in the hopes of capturing additional sales...The reservation policy is the same for the iPad mini, but we have been able to find iPad mini inventory increasingly available in the handful of stores that we called."

A new report by a Chinese company, Hon Hai Percision Inc., which assembles Apple's iPhone 5 says that the delay is due to its new avatar.

The company released a statement to the Wall Street Journal as follows, "to make it light and thin, the design is very complicated," said?an?official at the company who declined to be named. "It takes time to learn how to make this new device. Practice makes perfect. Our productivity has been improving day by day."

According to CNET,?this shortage of iPhone units is due to the phone's new display technology.

Apple depends on two companies- Sharp and LG Display, to produce its display screens. The latest display combines in-cell touch sensing technology, whereas the display of the 4S had a separate touch-screen and separate display screen. The two companies say the new technology of the iPhone 5 display has posed challenges for a speedy production. In addition, the new display costs seven dollars more than that of its predecessors. The new display costs the company $44 per piece, while the 4S cost $34.

According to the Apple website, customers could be waiting up to a month to get the latest iPhone. The website says there is a three to four delay in shipment.

On the other front, a Wall Street Journal article, accessible only through subscription, said Apple has already started manufacturing the mini-tablet, which is rumored to be released later this month or early next month.

According to ComputerAndVideoGames.com, "Apple Inc.'s Asian component suppliers have started mass production of a new tablet computer smaller than the current iPad, people with knowledge of the situation said, as the Silicon Valley company tries to stay competitive against rivals such as Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.that are offering smaller, less-expensive alternatives to the iPad."

A report from CNN Money suggested that Apple is likely to send event-invitation to its highly anticipated iPad Mini by October 23.

Philip Elmer-DeWitt for CNN Money doesn't stop at giving the launch a specific date, but also puts a specific date when the iPad Mini hits the shelves, which according to the article is on November 2.

It comes as no surprise that Apple refused to comment.?

Samsung under renewed fire over China labor breaches

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung came under renewed criticism from a rights group on Tuesday for illegal work practices at its Chinese suppliers, a day after the South Korean electronics giant admitted excessive overtime and fines for employees in China.

A number of foreign companies have been accused in recent years of improper labor practices in China, seen as a cheap source of labor for their production lines.

New York-based China Labor Watch (CLW) said employees at one of Samsung's suppliers sometimes worked up to 16 hours a day, with only one day's rest a month.

Samsung Electronics Co, the world's largest maker of cell phones and televisions, said on Monday a review of 105 of its Chinese suppliers - involving more than 65,000 employees - found illegal work practices, but said the companies involved would be given two more years to change their ways.

The audit followed allegations by CLW in August that seven children younger than 16 were working in one of Samsung's suppliers in China.

Samsung said the audit had found no evidence of child labor.

It did, however, concede several instances of inadequate practices, such as overtime hours in excess of legal regulations and the imposition of a system of fines for tardiness or absence.

"We have identified the need for initiatives to reduce employee overtime as a top priority, and we are researching and developing measures that will eliminate hours beyond legal limits by the end of 2014," the company said in a statement.

AUDIT RELIABILITY QUESTIONED

China Labor Watch said on Tuesday a follow-up investigation found that workers usually work from three to six times the legal overtime limit.

"The worst situation is in a Samsung supplier factory called Chitwing Mould Industry (Dongguan) Co., Ltd, where workers' overtime hours surpass 220 hours per month. Workers here can work up to 15 or 16 hours per day with perhaps one day of rest per month," CLW said in a statement.

"Samsung uses an audit system to monitor factories, but audits are renowned for their lack of reliability. Instead of audits, Samsung should establish direct channels of communication with its workers, such as worker committees or a worker hotline."

Samsung said on Tuesday hotlines were being set up for workers at supplier firms to report anonymously any inhumane treatment or violations of labor laws.

Samsung is reviewing 144 more suppliers in China and said the review would be completed by the end of this year.

The firm also said that from 2013 audits of its 249 suppliers in China would be conducted by an independent third party.

The move reflects a growing attention on work practices in China by foreign multinationals including Apple.

Apple Inc and its main contract manufacturer Foxconn Technology Group, whose subsidiary Hon Hai Precision Industry assembles Apple devices in China, earlier this year agreed to tackle violations of conditions among the 1.2 million workers assembling iPhones and iPads. That landmark decision could change the way Western companies do business in China.

15 Things All Moms Can Agree On (Hopefully...Well, Maybe ...

In light of the election that took place earlier this month and a country divided, I was inspired by a post from treehugger.com which highlighted?26 Things We Can All Agree On. I began contemplating the subject of motherhood with its diverse outlooks, beliefs, and countless ways we?ve amassed to raise our children. Aside from our individualities, are there any fundamental, concrete principles that all mothers can agree on? I hope so! Let?s face it, we all have an opinion, but at the end of the day what binds us is we all answer to that word, ?Mom.? Or?Mommy?or?Mama?or?Mom Mom Mom Mom Mom!?or?Madre?or?Mamacita?or Ma?or?well you catch my drift.

Spit-up, throw-up, early mornings, late nights. Infants, toddlers, teenagers. Just when we think we have it?all?figured out, motherhood throws us another damn curve ball. Well at least she keeps us on our toes. I for one am up for the challenge. You?

15 Things All Moms Can Agree On (Hopefully) (Well, Maybe?):

1.?Motherhood is tough.?This ongoing journey of ups and downs and winding roads is ever-changing and ever-challenging. Motherhood is an enormous task which reaps enormous rewards.

2.?LOVE is all you need. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.?I. LOVE. YOU.?Tell them. Show them. Repeatedly. Again and Again and Again.

3.?Mistakes are inevitable. They happen. More often than not. Let?s recognize the ones we?ve made and look to a future of not repeating them.

4.?Every child?is different.?But wait a minute, my first baby slept through night no problem. Uh huh. Doesn?t mean a thing. The sooner we realize that not all kids are the same, the better off we?ll be. Agree?

5.?Mom Guilt.?We all have it. We all recognize it. We all need to get over it and stop putting so much undue stress and pressure on ourselves. What?s the deal with us doing that anyways? Oh right,?mom guilt.

6.?Children are our teachers.?There is so much we can discover about ourselves from our children. We just need to take the time to slow down and learn the lessons. Patience, tolerance, spirit, hope, passion, honesty, excitement, acceptance?

7.?Time goes by too fast.?Days are long, but the years are short. A first-born will soon be taking a first step. Savor every moment. Yes, even that moment when the baby is crying incessantly and the toddler is yanking on your leg telling you that she just flushed your keys down the potty.?Okay well not every moment.

8.?Self-confidence -?We need it, desperately. It?s right there?inside?you. Find it. NOW.

9.?Mother?s change the world.?We are raising future generations.?This requires no further explanation.?

10.?We are all in this together.?Although we are highly diverse in appearance and culture, our instincts at the core virtually remain the same. To teach, to nurture, to bring up compassionate, hard-working, intelligent, healthy, responsible human beings that contribute something positive to society.?Not too much to ask for, right? If you?re doubt, please refer to #8.

11.?A Step-by-Step Guide to Motherhood DOES NOT exist. In motherhood we learn from that thing called?EXPERIENCE.

12.?We CAN NOT please everyone. Not even going to try to.

13.?Sleep is a necessity.?For mom. For dad. For kids. For?sanity.

14.?Taking a [hot/cold] shower may equate to a week-long vacation.?I was going to attribute this one to new moms especially, but I think all mothers can agree that five minutes in the shower has the ability to renew and recharge us ??even?if we have ?mommy brain? and think we can hear someone calling our name the entire time.

15.?Balance is something we all strive for.?On the outside. On the inside. Within our family, within our friendships, within our careers, within ourselves.

?Motherhood brings as much joy as ever?Nothing else ever will make you as happy or as sad, as proud or as tired, for nothing is quite as hard as helping a person develop her (his) own individuality especially while you struggle to keep your own.? ? Marguerite Kelly and Elia Parsons

Cutler returns with roar for Bears

QB throws touchdown pass two weeks after suffering concussion against Texans

Jay Cutler shares a laugh with Matt Spaeth as they wait for a touchdown replay call.

updated 5:35 p.m. ET Nov. 25, 2012

CHICAGO - Jay Cutler returned from a concussion to lead Chicago to a win, while the Bears now have to deal with injuries to Devin Hester and a slew of teammates.

Cutler threw for 188 yards and a touchdown after sitting out a game because of a concussion, and the Bears broke it open early for a 28-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in a game that saw Hester, Matt Forte, Charles Tillman and both starting guards sidelined.

Tied with Green Bay for the NFC North lead and just a game ahead of Minnesota (6-5) coming in, the Bears (8-3) grabbed a 25-3 halftime lead with Cutler connecting on just about every pass. The defense held Adrian Peterson in check early on, although he finished with 108 yards rushing.

Chicago also came away with three more takeaways to increase its league-leading total to 30.

The rather easy win came after back-to-back losses to Houston and San Francisco, but came with a heavy price.

Hester was lost early on to a concussion; Forte hobbled off midway through the third quarter with an ankle injury, and coach Lovie Smith said Tillman hurt his ankle.

Guards Lance Louis and Chris Spencer went out with knee injuries in the third quarter, with Louis' injury forcing Chicago to go with Gabe Carimi - who lost the right tackle job to Jonathan Scott.

As for Cutler, he looked sharp after missing Monday's blowout loss at San Francisco.

Back after being knocked out of the Texans game on a helmet-to-helmet hit by Tim Dobbins, he got off to a scorching start and completed 23 of 31 passes with an interception to go with the touchdown.

Brandon Marshall caught 12 passes for 92 yards and became the first Bears receiver since Marty Booker in 2002 to go over 1,000 yards. On defense, Henry Melton set the tone by sacking Christian Ponder on the first play from scrimmage. Nick Roach set up the first touchdown by knocking the ball out of Peterson's hands. Chris Conte set another TD with a 35-yard interception return, and Julius Peppers blocked a field goal.

The league's leading rusher, Peterson tied Robert Smith's club record with a 100-yard performance for the fifth straight game even though he managed just 25 in the first half. He also lost two fumbles.

Ponder wasn't much help, going 22 of 43 with 159 yards and a touchdown along with an interception. His favorite target, Percy Harvin, sat out his second straight game with a sprained left ankle, and the Vikings lost for the third time in four games.

Cutler completed 15 of 17 passes for 117 yards in the first half, and the Bears jumped out a big lead after a shaky start on offense.

Forte fumbled on Chicago's first play from scrimmage, leading to a 40-yard field goal by Blair Walsh - all the scoring the Vikings did in the half.

The Bears quickly turned this one around, starting with Roach's forced fumble. They took over on the Minnesota 34, and Michael Bush ran it in from the 1.

Chris Kluwe then shanked a 22-yard punt, giving Chicago possession near midfield before Robbie Gould kicked a 47-yard field goal. And the Bears stopped the Vikings again early in the second quarter when Peppers knocked down Walsh's 30-yard field goal, the 13th block of his career.

Bush, in for Forte, converted on a fourth-down run to keep a drive going and Antoine Winfield shoved Brandon Marshall to the ground as he attempted to catch a pass in the end zone. Bush then scored from the 1, and holder Adam Podlesh ran in for a 2-point conversion that made it 18-3.

Ponder got picked off by Conte and he returned it 35 yards to the Minnesota 13. That led to a scoring strike from Cutler to a lunging Matt Spaeth on the next play. It might have been more had Kevin Williams not blocked Gould's 39-yard field goal as the half expired.

Cause of Mass. gas blast that hurt 18 being probed

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) ? Dozens of building inspectors began assessing homes and businesses in one of New England's biggest cities on Saturday, a day after a natural gas explosion leveled a strip club located next to a day care and heavily damaged a dozen other structures. The blast injured 18 people, many of them first responders.

Investigators were trying to figure out what caused the Friday night blast in Springfield that could be heard for miles, left a large hole in the ground where the multistory brick building housing Scores Gentleman's Club once stood and scattered debris over several blocks.

Officials had already evacuated part of the entertainment district after responding to a gas leak and odor reported about an hour before the explosion while firefighters, police officers and gas company workers were in the area filled with commercial properties and residences.

"It really is a miracle and it's an example of our public safety officials, each and every day, putting themselves in harm's way, taking what could have been considered a very routine call of an odor of gas, but they took the proper precautions," State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said. "And thanks to God that they did."

Officials also marveled how the 5:30 p.m. blast occurred when a day care center next door was closed. The center's building was heavily damaged.

Lt. Gov. Tim Murray and Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno were attending a tree-lighting ceremony when the explosion occurred. Sarno said some people mistakenly thought the boom was part of the holiday event.

The explosion blew out windows in a three-block radius, leaving at least three buildings irreparably damaged and causing emergency workers to evacuate a six-story apartment building that was buckling, police said. Pieces of broken glass littered streets and sidewalks. It was unclear how many residents had been evacuated. A shelter was set up at a school.

Omar Fermin, manager of the Punta Cana Restaurant two blocks from the explosion site, found the floor-to-ceiling windows blasted out when he came to check on the property Saturday morning.

"It looks like an earthquake hit," said Fermin, a native of the Dominican Republic. "I've never seen anything like it."

He said he was waiting for somebody to come and assess the damage. He worried the restaurant would remain closed for weeks while the owner seeks to replace the massive custom-made windows.

Authorities cordoned off the center of the explosion Saturday morning as building inspectors worked to identify unsafe structures. Anxious residents gathered at the perimeter, waiting for permission to visit their buildings.

Dogs trapped in abandoned buildings barked out loudly Saturday as building inspectors fanned out across the area. One inspector said he wished he could get a ladder and permission to retrieve a dog that was barking in the upper floor of one building sealed off from residents.

Coan, the fire marshal, said his office was investigating a cause of the blast and its possible origin. The state's Department of Public Utilities was also investigating.

Sheila Doiron, a spokeswoman for Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, said the company will continue to monitor for any potential leaks within several blocks of the blast site. So far, she said, the company hadn't yet found any measurable readings.

Doiron said the company also didn't find in its records any gas odor calls to the area where the strip club was located.

The victims were taken to two hospitals in the city. None of their injuries was considered life-threatening, officials said. Those injured were nine firefighters, two police officers, four Columbia Gas workers, two civilians and another city employee.

Springfield, which is 90 miles west of Boston and has about 150,000 residents, is the largest city in western Massachusetts. It's known as the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame, which is not in the vicinity of the blast.

The city has been rebuilding from damage it sustained in a June 2011 tornado.

On Friday night, residents milled around the neighborhood where the explosion occurred, stunned by the destruction and confused by the cordoned-off area, which grew as crews continued to search for gas leaks. The mayor warned against looting, saying police would be out in force.

Wayne Davis, who lives about a block away from the destroyed building, said he felt his apartment shake.

"I was laying down in bed, and I started feeling the building shaking and creaking," he said.

The Navy veteran said the boom from the explosion was louder than anything he'd ever heard, including the sound of a jet landing on an aircraft carrier.

The blast was so loud it was heard in several neighboring communities. Video from WWLP-TV showed the moment of the explosion, with smoke billowing into the air above the neighborhood.

McCain Wants to Leave Abortion Alone; Republicans Move Away from Grover

John McCain sat down with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday to talk about everything from Susan Rice to the GOP's obsession with abortion. Turns out, he's softening a little on Rice. McCain previously shouted to anyone who would listen that Rice mishandled her tour of duty on the Sunday shows, and that he would attempt to filibuster the President if he nominated her for Secretary of State. On Sunday, McCain said he was open to sit down and talk about the Benghazi attacks with Rice, presumably like rational human beings. "I'd be glad to have the opportunity to discuss these issues with her," McCain said. "I think she deserves the ability and the opportunity to explain her position." That doesn't mean he's totally coming around on her, though. He still has some questions for her.?"Why did she say that al-Qaeda has been decimated in her statement here on this program?... They're on the rise in the Middle East," McCain said.?McCain, who has never met a foreign policy issue he didn't like, also said the U.S. should stop supporting Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's decree that gave him supreme executive power. More notably, McCain urged the rest of GOP brethren to shut up when it comes to abortion already, and he endorsed immigration reform.?"We have to have a bigger tent. No doubt about it. And obviously we have to do immigration reform," McCain said. "There is no doubt whatsoever that the demographics are not on our side." He advocated for a new Republican Party that isn't a bunch of contrarians.?"We are going to give a much more positive agenda. It can?t be just being against the Democrats? You?ve got to be for things, and we have to give them something like the 'Contract for America,'"he said. On abortion, McCain defended his own pro-life stance, but insinuated that some members of the party aren't really fit to talk about such delicate matters without stuffing their foot in their mouth.?"As far as young women are concerned, I don?t think anybody like me ? I can state my position on abortion, but other than that, leave the issue alone when we are in the kind of economic situation, and frankly, national security situation that we?re in."

Rep. Peter King said he would support violating?Grover Norquist?s?26-year-old year old no taxes pledge?during his appearance on NBC's?Meet the Press?on Sunday using probably the most hilarious defense imaginable.?"The world has changed and the economic situation is different," King said.?"If I were in Congress in 1941, I would have signed a declaration of war against Japan. I'm not going to attack Japan today." King said the country shouldn't be putting itself into a corner and eliminating any options.?"We should not be taking iron-clad positions," King said. "I have faith in John Boehner to put together a good package. I think so far he?s been pretty conciliatory in his language. I think John is going to do everything he can to avoid raising tax rates." Of course, King pointed to Reagan as an example of the two parties actually being able to compromise.?"The bottom line is that we can't have sequestration, we can't go off the fiscal cliff," King said. "If Reagan and O'Neill can do it, Boehner and [Democrats] can do it." It should be noted that McCain had a similar sentiment in his Fox News Sunday interview, and Lindsey Graham did, too, during his interview on This Week.?

Barney Frank blamed the Tea Party members of Congress elected in 2010 for the fiscal cliff, basically, on CNN's State of the Union. What he really said was that they were the ones who didn't want to compromise on anything, and that's why the country is in the position it's in.?"I do believe that there were elected some people in 2010, tea party influence, who repudiated the notion of compromise, and some of them said it exclusively," Frank told host Candy Crowley. "You have to start from a position of principle and then you work together. I think in 2007 and 2008 we showed how can you do that."?Frank was asked if he thought the President would be able to make a deal and not drive the country over the proverbial fiscal cliff it's currently barreling towards. "If there was a decision-maker who is being complacent in the face of this, we should be very critical. But the American Constitution and the American people have put people into a shared power situation who have had very different views," Frank?said. "Now, one thing is different. Maybe I'm being a little partisan here, but it does seem to me that in 2010 some people came to the Congress?who said compromise is a bad thing. I hope that as the result of the last election there's going to be less of that, and every one of us has to be prepared to vote for something we don't like."

Joe Lieberman still has suspicions about how the Benghazi talking points handed to Susan Rice were edited the way they were, but that doesn't mean he isn't open to her becoming Secretary of State. "I think, particularly in fairness to Ambassador Rice, there ought to be the widest public airing of what led to her statements and others in the administration particularly obviously if she's going to be nominated for secretary of state or some other high office," Lieberman told Candy Crowley on State of the Union. Crowley asked Lieberman if Rice would be an "automatic no" if she did get the Secretary of State nod, and the Congressman said he would be open to the idea. "She's had a distinguished career up until now," Lieberman said. "Secondly, I don't know, I don't feel that I know exactly what she was told before she went on TV that Sunday morning, and I think we ought to find out before we decide on whether she's a good or bad public servant."

Sen. Dick Durbin was certainly chipper on Sunday morning when asked about the chances of making a debt deal to avoid the fiscal cliff on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopolous. He also outlined what his goals for the deal are, and they include raising taxes on the wealthy.?"Let the rates go up to 39 [percent]. Let us also take a look at the deductions. Let's make sure that revenue is an integral part of deficit reduction," Durbin said. And yes, on my side of the table, bring entitlement reform into the conversation." When it was pointed out that the markets seem to be optimistic because they were up, generally, across the board this week, Durbin could only agree.?"They should be optimistic, because we can solve this problem," he said.

Someone who isn't starting to let up on Susan Rice: Sen. Lindsey Graham. McCain's tag team partner in the Rice outrage is still banging that drum as McCain's head has clearly cooled, at least a little.?"I don't believe that the best intelligence on Sept. 16 was that there was a spontaneous event in Benghazi that led to a mob that became a riot," Graham said on This Week, referencing the day Rice did a tour of the Sunday shows to talk about the attacks. Dick Durbin, also on the panel, even made a crack about Graham's persistence:?"If this were a football game, the critics of Ambassador Rice would be penalized for piling on." Everyone laughed.?"This is about four dead Americans, this is about a national security failure," Graham said. Well, Graham didn't.?"I blame the president above all others. When she comes over, if she does [as a nominee for Secretary of State], there will be a lot of questions asked of her about this event and others."

John Kyl said the 24/7 hyper accelerated news cycle of today is at least partially to blame for Congress' inability to get anything done on State of the Union.?"For one thing, the media now have a lot of time to fill: 24-7, cable TV, talk radio. They like to follow exciting things. Since most of it is political, they want to follow the contest, the fight, the scandal, and that's point number one," Kyl said. He longed for the old days before everyone actually paid attention to what Congress was doing.?There used to be "about a year after the election in which you legislated?then by about March or April of the election year things started to get pretty partisan and it was pretty hard to get things done," Kyl argued.?"We've now taken that to almost beginning the week after the election for a total period of two years, and so both parties are trying to set the other party up to make political mistakes and be criticized politically," he continued. "Media plays along with it because it makes good news. I don't know what the answer to that is, but I think that's part of the reason why it's been much more difficult for Congress to get things accomplished."?

This Week On Twitter: How Teachers Use Social Media, Top 20 ...

Need a little weekend reading? We?ve compiled our top ten Twitter stories of the week, which includes a look at how teachers are using social media, the top 20 social networks, how to build your brand online, the mobile social photo explosion and how social sharing is expected to make a huge impact on Cyber Monday shopping.

Here are our top 10 Twitter stories of the week.

1. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest ? How Teachers Use Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]

The massive growth in social media over the past decade or so has been hugely influential on almost every industry, and the teaching profession is certainly no exception ? channels such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have quickly become very popular in the classroom. Indeed, some 45 percent of K-12 (kindergarten through twelfth grade) teachers update a social networking site for work purposes ? almost two-thirds (65 percent) have used YouTube to upload videos and eight percent use Twitter for professional tasks.

2. From GetGlue And Path To Twitter And Facebook ? The Top 20 Social Networks [INFOGRAPHIC]

While the roots of social media can be traced back to email, USENET and the launch of the World Wide Web in the 1970s and 1980s, the phenomenon that we know and enjoy today found life with Friendster and Myspace (in 2002 and 2003 respectively), and then really took off when Facebook launched in 2004. Since then, and over the past ten years, these platforms, alongside Twitter, Foursquare, Pinerest and Instagram have revolutionised how billions of people use these tools in their personal and professional lives, and the continuous emergence of new social networks continues to refine and advance our understanding of this space.

3. Loyalty, Consistency And Social Media ? How To Build Your Brand Online [INFOGRAPHIC]

The internet has given businesses of all shapes and sizes in virtually every industry almost limitless options, and for new ventures the wealth of opportunity ? and decisions ? can be overwhelming. So here?s the big question: where on earth do you begin?

4. The Mobile Social Photo Explosion [INFOGRAPHIC]

The birth of camera photography can be traced back to 1826, when the French inventor Nic?phore Ni?pce made the first permanent photograph, entitled View from the Window at Le Gras. Fast forward to the present, and a staggering 3.5 trillion photos have been taken in the past 185 years. But this is absolutely the tip of the iceberg ? at the current rate of 380 billion new images being captured every year, the total amount of photographs ever made should double to 7 trillion in less than a decade from now.

5. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest ? How Social Sharing Will Boost Cyber Monday Shopping [INFOGRAPHIC]

Since its inception in 2005, Cyber Monday ? the Monday immediately following Black Friday when U.S. customers shop heavily online ? has seen extreme growth every year, with a further 14 percent expected to be added to the coffers in 2012, and a heady $1.42 billion of sales expected. This year, social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest are expected to play a major role, and some 57 percent of Americans are expected to shop from home on November 26th.

6. Does Your Company Have A Social Media Strategy? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Social media has empowered businesses of all shapes and sizes across almost every industry to raise brand awareness, engage a global audience, boost website footfall and drive sales ? providing they put in the work. But it?s all about the conversation. Social networking by definition implies a two-way relationship, and brands need to be prepared to manage the bad with the good. No business model is perfect, and companies make mistakes. Are you ready to deal with the criticism?

7. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram ? The 2012 Social Media All Stars [VIDEO]

It?s been a heck of a year for social media, but which social networks had their best-ever season? Which laggards have suddenly found themselves filling the role of benchwarmer? Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest all made the starting line-up in 2012, while YouTube, LinkedIn and Reddit provided strong support. But what about 2013 ? is there ever going to be room on the team for Foursquare, Path and born-again Myspace? or even (gasp) Google+?

8. Consumers Vs Marketers ? What Do We Really Want From Brands On Social Media? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Brands around the world are placing a greater emphasis on social media than ever before, but the disconnect between what consumers want, and what marketers think they want, has perhaps never been more apparent. While more than two-thirds (68 percent) of adult consumers are now online, just 26 percent say that they use social media to follow brands. Conversely, three-quarters (75 percent) of marketers think consumers are positive about social media marketing, to the extent that 25 percent of marketing budgets are expected to be allocated towards social media in 2013.

9. Social Travel Takes To The Skies [INFOGRAPHIC]

Today?s social traveller is savvy, using platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, plus hotel and restaurant reviews, to update their itinerary on the fly, and they won?t hesitate to switch allegiances or change their plans altogether. Conversely, social travelers who are highly satisfied will engage with the top travel brands and share their positive experiences with their friends and followers, boosting brand awareness, website traffic and sales.

10. #Tweetbeat Shows Where Negative Tweeters Live
