Claremont, CA --- Julie Eagle (Rock Island, IL) placed 10th in the high jump to highlight WPI's performance in the second day of competition at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships on Friday Noelle Richard (Oxford, MA) finished 19th in the women's 400 meter preliminaries while Jameel Galloway (Randolph, MA) competed in the men's high jump at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. ???
After passing on the opening height of 1.55 meters, Eagle then cleared the bar at the next three heights (1.59, 1.63 and 1.67) on her third and final attempts, before bowing out at 1.70.? The junior's height of 5 feet, 5.75 inches actually tied her for the sixth best height cleared but she claimed 10th place based on total misses.? Regardless, the height was two inches better than her showing at last year's championships, where she placed 14th.?
Richard, competing in her second straight outdoor championship and fourth overall NCAA event, clocked a time of 57.86 in the 400 meters to finish sixth in her heat and 19th overall.? The junior also improved on her performance from the 2011 outdoor championships at Ohio Wesleyan where she turned in a time of 58.27 and finished 21st.?
Galloway had a tough outing, not clearing the initial high of 1.90 meters.? Regardless, the junior, who was in his first season with the track and field program, had a great debut season, setting the school record with a height of 6-9 last month. ???
Also, late Thursday night Vicky Hewey (Sanford, ME) turned in a time of 11:15.31 in her heat of the 3000 meter steeplechase.? That was good enough for 19th place.?
WPI will wrap up competition in the three-day event with pole vaulter Emily Pearce (Avon, CT) competing Saturday. ?The event is scheduled for 3:30pm Eastern.?
